I Don’t Believe In The Prosperity Gospel
If you couldn’t preach it in a third world country, it’s not worth preaching
When I read my Bible, I grow closer to God.
When I read what Jesus said and did — one thing becomes clear to me.
Jesus loved and cared for those who were:
- poor
- social outcasts
- sick
- considered inferior (women, Samaritans, tax collectors)
- children
These were vulnerable groups who were often taken advantage of by the rich and powerful.
Yet Jesus cared for them. He did not want money or power for Himself. The only crown He wore was one made of thorns. His precious blood was spilled so we might have eternal life.
There are preachers out there who preach a prosperity gospel. This is false teaching. Jesus was never about living in a huge home or having a dozen cars. Pastors who raise money from their congregants to support a lavish lifestyle instead of helping those who are suffering in their own congregations and communities are not serving the will of God.
What is the will of God?
What does the Bible actually tell believers?
Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. — Ephesians 5:1–2
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…”– Galatians 5:22–23
The closer you grow to Christ, the more you will desire to emulate Him. And you will be more blessed than you can imagine, even if you live in a humble home.
This is a message you can preach anywhere in the world, whether in Calcutta or Chicago. It focuses on our relationship with God and with each other, not on the accumulation of wealth. This is a message that brings peace and joy to all of us, regardless of our wordly status.
Which is not to say that there is anything wrong with the honest acquisition of wealth. If you work hard, then of course you should get paid for your labor and if you save your money and are able to afford good things, there is nothing wrong with that. God also loves the rich. But for both rich and poor, the gospel teaches that He is the one we should serve, not false idols.
I am fighting stage IV cancer. If you can help with medical bills, I would really appreciate it. Or if you enjoy my writing and would like to buy me a cup of coffee, that’s great too. Maybe someday I can return the favor.
