I didn’t vote

The woes of a blue voter in a red county

There was a primary election in my state a few weeks ago, and I did not participate. Frankly, I was not inspired to cast a ballot. My county went 88% for Trump in the last election, in a state that Trump carried handily.

There were zero local Democrats on the county ballot and only a couple of Democratic candidates for US representative currently held by a Trump crony. The state has not elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994, longer than any other state in the US, and chances are that trend will continue for the next few election cycles.

I will vote in the general election, but I am pretty sure that my vote will not make a difference. The charismatic Democratic candidate for Governor does not stand a chance with the incumbent. The Lt Governor is facing a challenge, but again, he should be easily re-elected.

The only statewide race that might be affected is attorney general. The incumbent has been indicted for security fraud and is under FBI investigation for other charges. He is in a runoff for the Republican nomination. If he wins, the Democratic candidate actually has a chance in November.

I feel bad about not taking the time to drive to town to cast a ballot, but I really felt that it was a waste of time. I don’t like feeling that way, but 28 years of GOP dominance has a way of beating one down.

It can be very hard living in this red county while being blue. I am constantly barraged by Trump banners and signs on my way to my job every day. In fact, there is a sign in the front yard of a house that is direct across from a middle school that has a cartoon character pissing on the name “Biden”.

This flag is about a half-block from the same school. “Revenge tour”? Are you kidding me? I have heard too many people say they look forward to the day when they can shoot Democrats. But yet, the Democratic party is a non-element in my state. Sure, there are a few Democratic strongholds in the metro areas, but the state is large and mostly rural and ignorance is the norm when it comes to politics.

The school district in the town I work in is having an election for the school board in a few weeks. A religious zealot has signed up to run for a board position. The school board is supposed to be non-partisan, but this candidate touts his GOP service and has publicly called for banning books in the school. I don’t think he will win, but he is stirring up a lot of people with his rhetoric. I don’t live in the district, so I couldn’t vote if I wanted to.

But on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, I will go to the polls and will cast my ballot. I expect to vote for the few Democrats on my ballot for statewide office, even though I know going in that they do not have a chance. Between the restrictions that the state has put on voting and the lack of Democrats, it will be at least four more years before this becomes a competitive state again.
