I Didn’t Expect $136.08 My First Month on Medium

I joined Medium on January 25th, the day I posted my first article online.
I had no idea what I was doing!
Thankfully, the Medium community taught me everything I needed to know to earn over $100 during my first month.
Before March begins, I‘m throwing a good old breakdown of the most important stats of February.
I published 32 stories in February
Wow! That’s a lot considering I’d never written anything before.
For 29 days of February I earned an average of $4.69 a day.
My average earnings per story was $4.25.
Of course, some stories brought in much more than $4:
Over 2,500 Views and Almost 500 Followers.
In February, I ranked in 2,6K views and 1.6K reads.
My average read ratio was 61.5%
My average earnings per read were $0.085.
24 out of 32 Stories Were About Medium.
I became obsessed with Medium.
It was much easier to write about my experience as a new writer.
I ended up writing an article about Medium almost every day!
My favorite articles were:
The longest story was 1,577 words and the shortest a mere 148.
The average read time for my stories was 3.31 minutes.
I only wrote 3 pieces about Mental Health — what I thought I should be writing about, considering my expertise.
This was unexpected, but I was okay with spending time away from my Niche, and trying out something new.
I published stories in 14 different Publications:
- My most often used pub was Short. Sweet. Valuable, with 8 stories.
- I created a Pub for my weekly newsletter of the best articles about writing and growing on Medium.
- I checked 12 out of 23 of the best publications a new writer should go for and I joined 2 amazing publications for Mental Health.
My most often used Tags, in order of frequency used, were:
- Writing Tips
- Ideas
- Writing
- Self Improvement
- Making Money Online
- New Writers Welcome
- Money
That’s about it!
Beyond stats and dollars, my most valuable takeaway is how easy writing becomes after a month of practicing everyday.
Making money on this platform is easy.
Watching the numbers go up motivates me to write daily.
But the community and the determination to improve my writing are the real price.
