I Couldn’t Turn on the Laptop at My First Job

Where is the darn button?

I remember that moment clearly when I messed up BIG TIME in front of HR. And, couldn’t turn on the laptop! I was a third-year student back then and just got selected in a big IT company as a BI Consultant intern.

Happy moments, right?

I was on cloud nine. No one expected that out of me, not myself. It was the third year only. None of my friends have got into any company for internships. So, how could I?

Bye-Bye University and Friends

It was April of 2019 when the company visited our university campus. We were supposed to be at a pre-placement talk at 7:30 AM. Following that, there was an exam, group discussion, and the final interview. That very day, I remember my friends burst into my sleep and woke me up. They were already late and there I was sleeping!

When I remember that day, I think how did it happen? How did I manage to sit in the company exam, fumble in GD and still, crack the interview?

I was the “Greek god of IT interviews”. I cracked the interview in one go. No other friend of mine did that. But, I did!

Hello, “Company” World!

I was ready to relocate to a new city. And, a face-palm moment was waiting for me there.

Day 1 — Onboarding Process

After waiting for 30 minutes in the waiting room of the office, HR calls me in with another hired person. Now, I was sitting with the company HR and a new 5–6 years experienced hired person. After the warm greetings and little chit-chat, we were handed over our new laptops.

For a newbie intern, there is no better feeling than getting a new laptop by company. Mark my words!!

The HR gave me HP’s Elitebook 360 and the other person got Dell’s ThinkPad. She asked us to boot up the laptop to understand some tools that the company use. For a guy like me who has worked on MacBook, my instincts aimed for the far right-hand topmost corner to start the machine. But, there was no boot button there. I look at the left corner, not there either

Where is the darn power up button?

I take a glance at the other person’s screen and I see his laptop has already turned on. And, I could hear that Windows tune! But, I couldn’t find the start button on my laptop. I knew that it is getting humiliating. So, I had to quickly fire up the laptop. The only solution I had-

Try and Press every single button but at godspeed!

But, still, it didn’t fire up! Till then, I guess HR noticed what was going on. As I told her laptop’s not booting up, she said the key is on the left edge of the laptop. You are not doing it right, Vishal.

And, I was red. My heart started pumping blood like a powerful hydraulic pump and all that blood was rushing to my face. Hence, making it red like a tomato. I was cursing HP’s design and just wanted to get out of the room ASAP.

Till then, it was too late. My mind started playing games with me — “WHAT WOULD THE HR THINK?”. I tried to focus and was done with my onboarding process rapidly. As soon as I stepped out of that room, I kept my laptop on my seat, rushed into the washroom, looked into the mirror, and laughed at the “Greek God of IT Interviews” who could not turn up the laptop at his first-ever job.

For every CS guy who gets an HP Elitebook on his first job day, the power up button is on the left edge.

Lesson Learnt: Ask if necessary, don’t try to be smartypants all the time. If I could have asked in the first place, the HR wouldn’t have sweetly jabbed me at my face.

Peace!
