I Choose Gratitude
A prose poem

Each time something beautiful or interesting — like a feather in the sand —catches my eye and captures my curiosity, I feel gratitude. I feel gratitude when I have time and am physically able to stop, take a look, wonder, and enjoy. As the sun sets each day, as an interesting bunch of clouds passes by, as a bird calls to another within my hearing, as the lilacs bloom and cast their scent —I feel gratitude. I feel like the universe has positioned me perfectly to take in the awe of that moment. Somehow I am in exactly the right place at exactly the right time for this unique experience that was chosen for me. I feel gratitude.
My son’s adoption story, once again, right place and right time —I feel limitless gratitude. When I think about how lucky I am to have found my husband and the life that we have built together, I feel gratitude. For my friends and family, coworkers and career, more gratitude. The outside space and nature that I have access to and the travels to experience new places all bring gratitude too. When I find someone in need and I am able to help and they feel gratitude — I feel gratitude for being able to help. For the time I had in quarantine that pushed me to begin writing, gratitude again.
The life I live is full of gratitude. I choose gratitude.
I know that there is a lot of research available about how gratitude can positively impact many areas of our lives mentally and physically. There are therapies centered around gratitude. There are many self-help resources available to increase gratitude in one’s life and to help us obtain the benefits of feeling more gratitude.
I haven’t read much of the research or sought the strategies — but I can say from experience, having a life full of gratitude is a calm and fulfilling feeling.
Gratitude makes everything better.
