I Caught a Sunbeam Bouncing off the Moon
Then another and another, full moon had begun

Full Moon is my favorite phase of the lunar cycle.
Her glowing spotlight in the sky reminds me that the sun continues to shine on the other side of our precious planet, giving birth to a new day and sending people on their way to wakefulness.
My circadian clock winds down as the evening approaches. I scan the sky, eyes wide in wonder and delight.
Tonight, in alignment, the moon catches the fiery balls of sun’s light and bounces moonbeams back to me accompanied by dancing stars, a glimpse of Venus and perhaps of Mars.
The silhouettes of back lit trees tease my imagination. I plant my feet firmly on the ground in case I’m carried away and step too close to the edge of the veranda!
I’ve missed many full moons because of the overcast weather. Sometimes a break in the cloud cover can reveal a prism of warm lunar colors before they disappear again. It’s a pity I don’t own a camera to capture those magic moments forever.
These memories of moonlight linger loudest in my heart:
- Hubby and I lying on our backs under the stars while camping at Sodwana Bay, within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site. We arranged our holiday so that we could be there during the Full Moon. What an awesome sight — no city lights to dim the stars.
- I was away from hubby for six months in the UK before the internet and cell phones! We corresponded weekly and also agreed to view the full moon at the same time every month. I would stand in the moonlight at my bedroom window and send him messages of love, knowing he was doing the same for me!
- My favorite nephew who lives in the UK has the same arrangement with us. We watch the full moon, knowing he is looking too!
Silvery moonlight is so much gentler than golden sunlight. The latter requires us to wear sunglasses to protect our eyes from the glare and stay indoors when the temperature soars.
I’ve never heard of anybody wearing moon glasses!
Moonlight whispers of romance, poetry and music. The soft-hued moonbeams calm and relax us. We can amble or picnic outdoors under the full moon without need for candles or torches and connect to our true nature.
“The moonlight lay everywhere with the natural peace that is granted to no other light.” — Franz Kafka, The Trial
Let me leave you with Georgie Fame’s version of Van Morrison’s composition Moondance. If you love the Hammond organ and scat-singing, you’re gonna love this!
