I Can’t Relate to Elon Musk and Don Lemon

Their lifestyles are out of my atmosphere

Elon Musk fired Don Lemon this week.

Most of us don’t care. It’s not like either of these guys are hard done by. Maybe Donny Boy has his ego bruised a little bit but he’ll brush it off, take a sip of his Dom Perignon, and move on to the next project.

But it’s interesting. I’ll read the articles, have a discussion with my wife, lament by the water cooler, and move on with my life, taking a sip of Mountain Dew.

I read the New York Post article relating to the firing of Don Lemon. The article highlighted the outlandish demands Donny made to X’s leadership. Lemon’s people have denied it but true or not, the demands made me think of the last negotiation I had with my current employer. The contrast is staggering.

Let’s look at what Don Lemon is alleged to have demanded.

  • A free Tesla Cybertruck -A $5 million upfront payment on top of an $8 million salary -An equity stake in the multibillion-dollar company -The right to approve any changes in X policy as it relates to news content -A private jet flight to Las Vegas, a suite for him and his fiance, and the company pay for their day drinking and massages. This was for an interview that Elon had agreed to do with Don.

Let’s look at what I demanded.

I was making C$28.00/hr at my current job. To make the job change I demanded C$30.00/hr.

Stop laughing.

These guys are so far from our reality that they can’t see us. They may try to but I don’t see how they can. I can’t see them. I can’t relate to demanding a payment for a massage let alone a Tesla truck.

Reading the Wikipedia stories of these two gentlemen, we see that Don may have passed through my level of wealth and standing. Elon came from wealth so no chance.

Final thoughts

I don’t begrudge these men for the success they’ve achieved. They worked hard, took chances, and put themselves out there for all to see. Despite judgement and ridicule they pressed forward and continued to do so. They are risk-takers. As someone said, Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I marvel at the span between our classes. It’s vast, farther than the east is from the west. I can’t see it closing any time soon.
