I Can’t Live Like This Anymore

Watching people suffer because our “leaders” are selfishly incompetent and greedy

Writing and reading, I was feeling lost. Wondering what’s the point of writing if I can’t contribute to affecting some change in the world. Reading fired me up with ideas, then almost as quickly impotence doused the flames leaving me dejected and exhausted.

How do we turn this around? What actions do we take to stop these, mainly white men, from destroying our world? Covid is ravaging the population, leaving us fatigued and distressed. My kids are doing their best to keep up with leaders whose lack of a plan and clear incompetence is displayed daily.

Today our esteemed leaders wail omicron is rising, but go to school. Next day they change their minds and the kids are to stay home. For two days. Why? What’s the point?

Going to school doesn’t make the kids feel safe, online learning isn’t much better.

There’s no strategy. No coherent plan and it’s obvious. My kids are disgusted with these leaders.

I tell them, this is what they can expect for the rest of their lives when…if…they get jobs. It’s not encouraging, but I’m not into fantasy. I tell them the truth.

These leaders have no plans. They don’t know what they’re doing. Short of a revolution, I don’t know how we get rid of them en masse. Even if we do, what’s our new model, especially if most people want to cleave to capitalism like it’s not a straight shot over the waterfall to moral and physical death.

Going forward with the same system we have is pointless. It’ll lead to the same result we’re now facing. A world that has erratic weather patterns, storms that devastate lives, destroying infrastructure overly reliant on the very same pollutants that feed the new violent weather patterns.

We’re in the midst of what scientists are calling the 6th mass extinction. With over 500 species at risk. Including humans, I would think, as this environmental disaster is reversible.

And the “respectable” media outlets display headlines like they’re tabloids. “Will trump be indicted today? New documents reveal…”

In my province of Ontario despite a pandemic that has torn apart people’s lives, throwing them onto the street in too many cases; our sneaky Conservative government led by the despicable Doug Ford (Doug’s the brother of Rob, our former and now deceased crack-smoking Toronto Mayor) is trying to bring in American style health “care.”

It all comes off as if our lives are a big joke to the grifters. Those politicians, media, and business moguls.

There’s no sense of urgency. Rather, there is an urgency. As usual, it’s for money and profit above people.

And I thought the Ferengi of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine were over the top.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what ‘change’ could look like, what it could be. It’s got to be radical — meaning, very different than what we have now. I wrote once about homeownership and giving homes away.

I’ve moved forward with that idea. I think we can 3D print homes and give them to people who need them. I’m publishing those ideas on Substack and what action I’m taking to make giving away beautiful homes a reality.

Because honestly, I can’t live like this anymore. I can’t watch people beg out in the cold, at the side of the road, for pennies while I sit comfortably in my broken old car.

I’m working to convince the powers that be in my area that giving away homes is viable and something we need to do. So far my idea seems to be catching on. I’m building support and exploring to see how this model can become reality.

So, follow me on Substack and together we’ll see if I can contribute to helping a few people, or if I fall flat on my face. However it goes, the idea will be loosed on the world.
