I Can’t Give Up On My Dream of Writing Full-Time
I’m just going about it a different way this time

In the past, I wanted to work from home so badly that I was willing to write anything and accept any kind of pay. I’ve written a lot of one-cent-a-word articles.
I know many of you have the same dream. Being able to work from home and make money is not an uncommon goal. Many of you have likely thought about writing full-time. Have you thought about what that looks like for you?
I’ve learned that if the work isn’t satisfying for me, if I don’t feel motivated by what I’m writing, I will procrastinate against writing it. I will put it off until the very last minute — and sometimes past that last minute.
So, my dream of writing full-time is still there. I’ve just set some boundaries on what I’m willing to do to get there.
One of my boundaries is that I won’t write on topics I’m not interested in. So, no, I won’t write your articles about web hosting or how to choose the right nuts or bolts for your home project or the benefits of dental crowns. Yes, those are all topics I’ve written before.
I’m working on narrowing down what topics I’m willing to write about now.
Secondly, I’m not writing for pennies a word if I don’t get to keep the rights to my work.
Medium is different — I write what I want and I keep all rights. I can take it down, reuse it, or repurpose it. It is mine.
But if I write for a client, they are going to have to pay good money to have all rights to my words!
Finally, my focus is on building my business. I write for myself first. Then, if I want to write for someone else to make a little extra money I can.
My priorities are (in this order):
- Amazon/fiction ebooks
- Medium
- My own blogs
Have you thought about what it means to write full-time? What are you willing to do to get there?
Medium might not be showing you all my articles! The best way to make sure you don’t miss anything is to sign up to get emails when I publish. You can support my work by becoming a paying member PLUS you can read many thousands of other writers, too — and the best part? NO ADS! You can become a paying member here (if you use my link, I’ll keep a portion of your membership fee each month). You can also learn to write and earn money on Medium!
