I Can’t Believe What I’m Seeing Out the Window
what are they DOING out there?!
I live in a very rural part of my state.
No, I don’t live in the country or in the middle of a forest; even still, there are few people who live around my house in a small country town.
One of the few people that live next to me is an older couple who are always busy working outside. Always. They are either having a yardsale, or splitting firewood, or having grandkids over.
This family — I’ll call them the Smiths for privacy reasons — lived in their corner house long before we moved into the neighborhood. And that was almost 20 years ago. And they’ve been good, quiet neighbors.
Well, except for July 4 of every year when the 💥firecrackers come out (and for days before and after, we’re all jumpy because the sounds come at such random times!) and my cats and I simply endure until they’ve run out of ammunition.
So, I’m glancing out my blinds, and….
So imagine my surprise when I happened to glance through my blinds last evening to see a flurry of activity. There were so many people scurrying here and there, from vehicles to the house to the sheds (yes, there are more than 2) in such a buzz of movement that I had difficulty at first figuring out what exactly is happening. As a moving trailer backed into my field of vision, I began to get a clue.
😮The Smiths are moving. No way. They’ve been here for decades. And nothing in the last week or month gave me any indication that they were even considering moving. No for sale signs, no moving boxes being randomly taken inside. Nothing.
What’s really odd is that within 45 minutes, the trailer was loaded and everyone vanished as quickly as they’d come. The property was quiet as I’d never heard it before. Just out of curiosity, I tried calling their phone. I got a recording that the number was out of service.
Then the tanks with flashing lights swarmed in….
While I was in the process of trying to hold up the blinds and hang up the phone at the same time — it’s not as easy as you’d think — around the corner came about 5 of those big black tank-looking trucks you only see on tv. They had lights flashing blue and red and about 15 big burly guys piled out in 2 seconds and surrounded the Smith’s house.
Needless to say, I spent the next 2 hours trying to convince them that I don’t know anything about where the Smiths might be, that I saw absolutely nothing and that I barely know the people.
But it does make you wonder.
I mean, even in a small town people apparently have (and can keep) their secrets.
Who knew?

This story was written from a list of 30-day writing prompts about events from my personal life. This wasn’t one of them. It was a work of fiction.
Hey-I really do live in a small town. But nothing exciting ever happens here, so I have to make my own fun.
