I Came Out. That’s What We Do.
A poem
I came out of my mother’s womb like everyone else. I came out to play when it rained. I came out in support of the kid who was bullied. I came out of school not knowing what I wanted to be. I came out to nature because the city was suffocating. I came out as spiritual when that was uncool. I came out as gay because that was my truth. I came out again when I dated a guy half my age. I came out of darker experiences feeling stronger than I went in. I came out as a vegetarian in a country that celebrates meat. I came out as eating meat again when I lost a whole lot of weight. I came out to fight for the rights of the vulnerable. I came out to protest many injustices. I came out to shovel snow from my neighbor’s drive. I came out to greet the missionaries even though I wasn’t interested. I came out when I witnessed the misuse of power in the workplace. I come out when I write stories and poetry. I come out as a way of helping people feel seen. I come out because it gives others courage. I come out because it gives me courage. I come out because I can’t think of anything more human. I continue coming out because that’s the first thing I did in life. It’s my oldest talent. Perhaps the only one that matters.
