I Asked My Friends What Is An Inspirational Person To Them And This Is What Happened

Traits of highly inspirational people according to the people I know

When I got my ukulele for the first time, some friends came over to my house, and none of them knew what a ukulele was. One of them actually laughed at the idea of learning music when you have so much going on in your life, and they ASSURED me that I would quit in less than 2 weeks. Little did they know, I did not, and little did I know, the one who was the least supportive, asked me where to get one (funny isn’t it).

Two other kind friends, who have noticed the progress I have made after playing the ukulele for one month, purchased a ukulele themselves.

My older sister (who is one of my biggest fans) purchased a ukulele right after she got her PhD as well. And, many of my friends got inspired and started learning a new instrument/hobby.

Now, the ukulele is one of the easiest instruments to learn. Still, people who have noticed the amount of joy this little thing has brought me, felt inspired enough to get out of their own comfort zone. One of them whom I really encouraged to start the piano is already making so much progress. Now that is impressive!

This got me thinking…

Is tangible drive what makes a person inspiring? WHAT ARE the traits of inspirational people?

Little disclaimer, I do not consider myself to be an inspirational person, it is a skill I would like to build for sure, but I have to admit that this is one of the few times where I actually did something I really wanted to do with extreme decisiveness, and the impact was pretty impressive!

As I was writing this article, I really wanted to know other’s perception of the people who inspire them.

I have asked all of my friends and family the following question: What is your definition of an inspirational person?

Answers varied from someone that you want to follow, a leader that you admire, to someone who does not have to be successful but rather motivated, self-driven, and spreads good energy.

I have put together the following list after collecting all the answers I received.

To most people I know, an inspiring person is someone who is:

Authentic

It is very hard to be true to oneself. The amount of pressure we receive from our environment is enormous. Inspirational people have a strong sense of identity and do not let popular opinions affect their choices.

Courageous

“What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?”

Vincent van Gogh

Inspiring people acknowledge the fear and transform it into motivation. When I think about courageous leaders, I immediately picture Nelson Mandela, why is he so inspiring? Nelson teaches fore and foremost courage in fighting for the matters you believe in.

Passionate

Genuine passion is so inspiring. If you identify what you enjoy doing, no matter what small or big it is, you simply need to galvanize yourself into taking action. Inspiring people not only take action but also inspire others to do the same with their own passions.

Visionary

“Good leaders have vision and inspire others to help them turn vision into reality.” ― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart

Inspirational people do not seek approval but rather have a strong sense of purpose. They have their own vision of life, a vision that may seem hard to adopt and live by daily, but serves their purpose.

Ordinary

You DO NOT have to do wonders to be an inspiring person!

Spreading those good vibes

People, who encourage, help others to stay positive and actually bear what one of my friends called the burden of making their environment- whether it is their house, society, country or the world- a better place.

HUMBLE!

Almost all of my friends finished their answers with the following statement: You can check all the conditions for being an inspirational person and still not be one! Simply because you are arrogant. Now there is a HUGE difference between confidence and arrogance.

Arrogance repels, confidence attracts

Humble people do not seek to win, and this is such an inspiring personality trait that eventually leads to empathy. The humble are in a constant battle against themselves, they try to better themselves without looking down on others.
