I Asked Hairdressers: What Should Everyone Know About Their Hair?
This is what they told me.
You may ask Why the fuck am I reading this? I’m bald. Because you do it out of respect for the hair you once had. I am sorry for all of the losses you sustained. They will be remembered. Let’s begin with tips from a hairdresser with 20 years of expertise in the field.
Don’t wash your hair every day. Super important. If you can go 3–5 days that’s ideal. It takes time for your scalp to adjust and every scalp is different, but for most people, you need to allow the natural oils that your head produces to travel down the hair. It really helps keep your hair healthier longer.
The product DOES matter, things like sulfates and parabens completely strip your hair, making the cuticle more exposed and therefore more frizzy and damaged.
Always always use a heat protectant if you’re putting any heat on your head. This makes a difference, long-term heat use is incredibly damaging. When your hair grows out of your head, it will only get more damaged.
Trim your damn hair! As she said, you can take the absolute best care of your hair, and hair that is 3–4 years old or older is always going to need a trim. Its exposure to you just living your life is damaged enough for it to warrant a trim. Don’t wait because you want it long, it will break off and that’s not going to help you in the long run.
Men: WASH AND CONDITION your beards! It’s hair, it collects dirt and oil just like our scalp but it’s also on your face. The condition helps the coarseness of the beard hair feel much softer, you can use any products on it you use on your scalp, unless you have very sensitive skin, then I would use something recommended for beards specifically!
Skincare and hair care are different for everyone. These are some guidelines for most people but doesn’t work for every single person. The general public way overwashes their hair, and it’s good to be aware of that:)
I got a bit further in this subject and contacted a cosmetology teacher friend (I did my homework, I think I deserve at least 20 claps at this point lol). This is what she told me:
Shampoo your hair twice, every time you wash it. Round one gets dirt and build-up off, and round two actually cleans the scalp.
How often should you wash your hair? As often as you need to. It varies from person to person.
Get your ends trimmed regularly. No, it technically doesn’t make your hair grow faster, but it's healthier and will split less, which in turn will allow you to keep your hair longer.
My hair doesn’t ever want to grow past ‘x’ length, why? Hair goes through 3 phases: Anagen, Catogen, and Telogen. Anagen is growth, catogen is rest, telogen is shed. Anagen phase length is different for everyone. Some peoples anagen phase can last for several years at a time, and others only last a few months. If you have a very short anagen phase, your hair simply will not grow any faster. There’s no safe way to work around this — products that can actually disrupt your phases have hormones in them that can be harmful to many, and deadly to some (finasteride for example).
Last, and most important: be honest about your hair history if you want to keep your hair. She has seen lots of melted-off hair because a client lied about at-home bleaching and coloring. A well-trained stylist will turn you away if they don’t believe your hair has the integrity to handle whatever color service you want. She teaches her students that integrity comes first, and what the client wants comes second. If we they tell you you it can’t be done, it’s perfectly fine to get a second opinion, but make sure you get it from another reputable stylist, not your friend who went to Cosmo school for 6 months and dropped out. Their reputation depends on taking care of their client’s hair. Once you leave a stylist’s chair, you are a walking billboard for their services. Trust them!
