I asked Chatopen.ai to Write Five Bed Stories For My Grandchildren

And put them to the test; I recommend you do it too

Image created on Midjourney by the Author

Several months ago, I wrote an article titled “How AI Text Generators Will Impact the Writing Industry” about the effect these new programs would have on manufacturing, self-driving cars, speech recognition, and the writing industry.

In the following weeks, there has been an explosion of articles recommending, reviewing, analyzing, and testing AI text generators. Nevertheless, after reading Chaz Hutton’s article asking it to create comics, I decided to give it another try and put ChatGPT to a new test.

How would the generated stories appeal to a children’s audience? Would they be interested, or would they be bored and reject them?

This is what I discovered.

The Parameters

For the first part of the experiment, I asked the AI program to generate five random children’s books, and these are the titles and themes created:

1. A story about a young dragon who learns to control its fiery breath and becomes a hero in its village.

2. A group of animal friends who go on an adventure to find a lost treasure.

3. A young girl discovers she has magical powers when she dances and learns to use them for good.

4. A mischievous young raccoon named stripes who want to go to Africa for a safari.

5. A young boy named Jimmy who learns to appreciate and protect nature and teaches others to do it too.

Notice the titles have everything children like, from dragons to raccoons and from ballerinas to a boy who wishes to protect nature. Even one of a group of animals on their journey to find a treasure. (You can find the stories at the end of this article).

Every story had all the elements of a children’s book, an introduction of the characters, a plot, and a message at the end. However, after I asked the kids their opinion, they all agreed that though everyone found something they liked, they never captured their imagination.

Back to the Drawing Board

I decided to try with a new set of young critics and raised the bar. My parents had over thirty grandchildren, ranging from fifty to four years old. Since I don’t have any, I opted for the next best option and asked my sisters if they would let me try with their own. I selected two girls and three boys between four and eight years old.

As for the stories, I included information about my new subjects, like their toys and any activities they enjoy besides playing. This time the results were remarkable. The AI program generated a more detailed story and included the information provided and a different plot every time, incorporating the information I supplied.

Here are the parameters I provided and a summary of the story for each child. If you want to read the full version, click on the story’s titles.

1.- Alonso is a young boy who loves playing with Legos and soccer. His heroes are spider-man, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor.

“Alonso’s Superheros Soccer Team” One day, a strange portal opens up on the field while playing alone. The superheroes step out dressed in their Avengers soccer uniforms and invite him to join their team, and he scores the winning goal.

2. Marina, an eight years old girl who loves ballet. She plays make-believe putting makeup on and combing her hello Kitty, Barbies, and rainbow-bright unicorn toys.

“The Magical Ballerina” One day, her dolls go missing, and she is heartbroken. She discovers them under her bed, and they tell her they want to come to watch her ballet class. With the support of her friends, Marina becomes the best dancer in her class.

3. Martin, an eight years old boy who loves to play with his Star Wars Mandalorian’s Grogu, Sonic the Hedgehog, and his dinosaurs toys in Dr. Seuss’ book adventures.

“Martin, Grogu, and Sonic’s Adventures in Dr. Seuss’ books.” One day, a strange wind blew through the boy’s room and whisked them away into a magical land. Martin followed the wind and found himself in the world of Dr. Seuss, where the wise old owl and the Lorax helped him find his toys and defeat the Grinch to rescue them.

4. Mila is an eight-year-old girl who loves gymnastics, Ariel the mermaid, boats, and all sea creatures. She wants to be a vet when she grows.

The Little Gymnast, the Mermaid, and Sea Creatures” While sailing with her family, she is washed up on a deserted island where she met Ariel and helped her treat and nurse injured sea creatures back to health, learning about the different sea creatures and their habitats. Later grew up to be an excellent marine veterinarian.

5. Diago is a six-year-old boy who loves cars, planes, and robots. He likes to play with his Power Rangers. His parents always tell him he needs to eat healthier, not just tortillas and bread.

The Boy Who Loved Tortillas and Bread” One day, his Power Rangers take him to fight the evil Junk Food King, who’s trying to take over the world by making everyone eat unhealthy food. They help Diago to understand the importance of eating fruits and vegetables and the importance of eating healthily.

Take Away

Contrary to the disastrous results of the first stories among children, where they got bored, the stories got their attention the second time. Not only did they love them, but they read them to one another, like in a contest trying to find which one was better.

That’s when I started generating more stories using the children’s ideas. Each time they were better, as if the AI was learning from them and creating better material each time. Now, instead of asking me to read some bedtime stories from a book, they ask me to use my cell phone and create a new one every day.

This new activity built more rapport between us. Not only do I get to read them a different story every day, but they are becoming more creative each time, and instead of refusing to go to their room, they run and wait for me to create a new adventure to read.

You should try this with your children or grandchildren. If you do, please comment below.
