Summary

A customer had a dispute with their pharmacist over a medication shortage and now prefers to use a mail delivery service for prescriptions.

Abstract

The author recounts an experience at their local pharmacy where they were shorted a 30-day supply of medication, leading to an argument with the pharmacist. Despite facing skepticism and being perceived as an over-user or addict by both the pharmacist and those in line, the author successfully advocated for the correct medication amount. This incident prompted a shift to ordering refills online and opting for mail delivery to avoid similar confrontations and the associated stigma.

Opinions

  • The author felt unjustly treated and possibly stigmatized by the pharmacist's accusation of overusing medication.
  • The author experienced embarrassment and discomfort due to the public nature of the dispute and the potential judgment from other customers.
  • The author's opinion of their local pharmacy seems to have been negatively affected by the incident, leading to a preference for the impersonal and less confrontational mail delivery service.
  • There is a sense of relief or satisfaction in resolving the medication issue and finding an alternative solution that avoids future disputes.

I Argued With My Pharmacist

So I started using mail delivery service

I will never forget the day I stood in line at my hometown pharmacy with a calendar. The hour prior I counted pills, spilled out on the bathroom counter.

When it was my turn, I held my chin high and pointed to the month, filled with x’s and scribbled notes.

“You shorted me 30 days.” I outlined my math, showed her the auto-refill texts.

“No, we didn’t. If you need more you’ll have to pay out of pocket. Your insurance thinks you are overusing.”

As we argued — the line got longer — neighbors tapped their feet impatiently. I wondered if they thought I was an addict.

I got my way. I walked out with my 30-day supply of medication — for anxiety — and also a complex.

Now, I order my refills online and get them delivered.
