I am the Vulnerable
No, it’s not your job to protect me.
To mask or not to mask seems to be the debate of the year. The main argument for masks, is that by wearing them we are protecting our vulnerable population. Guess what? It’s not your job to protect me.
I am the immune compromised.
I am an asthmatic.
I am the chemotherapy patient.
I am the vulnerable population.
But I am not your responsibility.
To mask or not to mask seems to be a popular, but polarizing, debate in our country. And has been for the last year. There is chasmic divide in the opinion on whether or not, masks should be required for everyone. Some believe that the masks work and that everyone needs to wear them when in public. While others do not believe that masks make any difference. One of the main arguments for masks, is that we need to protect our vulnerable. And I 100% agree, IF you have high risk family members.
I have a variety of health issues, which require me, and those around me to take extra precautions because of covid. I stay home as much as possible. When I do go out, I wash my hands frequently, and use sanitizer. And I always, even pre-pandemic, wipe down the cart handles before shopping. My kids limit who they hang out with, even though I have never actually asked that of them. What I have done, is explained to them how covid could affect me, if I caught it.
BUT what I refuse to do, and something that I think is wrong, is making healthy people mask up. If you have people in your family that are high risk, then you should absolutely mask up. However, a normal healthy family with no preexisting conditions, should be able to go on with their normal lives. With the option of wearing a mask or not wearing one.
The bottom line is that my faulty immune system is ultimately my responsibility, and mine alone. I can ask those around me, to take precautions, but they really don't have to. What I can’t do, is ask that everyone in the country mask up because my immune system is shot. That would be like banning all avocados because I am allergic to them.
To mask or not to mask. That's a debate that isn't likely to go away anytime soon. But this is the United States, home of the free. Everyone should have the choice to mask or not. Do your research. Know your household, and family members, and act accordingly. Personally, I can’t wait for the day we can throw all the masks away, and once again see people smiles.
