I am Shades of Gray

A Poem

Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

What does it say about me that gray is my favorite color? A bastion of safety in a world of magenta A nondescript parking lot of a person not making waves I am shades of gray

Neutral and unopposing allowing the world to walk right through me and not even see me because I blend so well in my monochromatic suit in a sea of darker hues

Unnoticeable and immeasured because gray stands still like time, but more boring and even though I am swell as a background I am never the main event So I watch from the back as burnt orange performs

I am shades of gray Subtle differences that you won’t see but that I will feel deep inside my homogenous palette You will be swayed by sunflower and cobalt blue and I will watch your face drop when you see me Gray, as an emotion

I am tonally fragmented but only I know because to you I just look like one big pile of indifference And honestly, that’s how I feel I am shades of gray

I am no one’s first choice although I help them shine I am here to make them look better like all of the paintings on their gray walls Unappreciative of how they are held so they can be their best and look better than they are

I am shades of gray Neither happy or sad The color of a flatline which you think signifies my death but really it’s just my life that looks different than your chartreuse existence So, I’ll be here as a backdrop to your more illustrious story Holding space for everyone else
