Summary

The text reflects on the narrator's lingering presence and unacknowledged contributions despite their departure, as they observe and listen from the shadows, contrasting their own humility with the community's self-congratulatory attitude.

Abstract

The poem "I Am Here in the Shadows" presents a narrator who, despite being on the fringes, remains acutely aware of the community's inner workings and self-aggrandizement. The narrator, who is not physically present, is still intimately connected, hearing the unspoken thoughts and justifications of the people. These individuals, once victims, now claim heroism and neighborhood dominance, yet the narrator's silent support and sacrifices go unrecognized. The narrator accepts their diminished role, content in the knowledge that their humility allows others to shine, finding solace and a sense of duty in their anonymity.

Opinions

  • The narrator feels unrecognized for their contributions to the community's success, implying a sense of injustice.
  • There is a hint of sarcasm in the narrator's tone when referring to the community's celebration of their own achievements without acknowledging the narrator's role.
  • The narrator suggests that their refusal to follow the community's advice led to their perceived downfall and subsequent erasure from the community's narrative.
  • Despite the community's self-congratulatory behavior, the narrator takes pride in their own actions, finding value in their selflessness.
  • The narrator seems to critique the community's focus on victory and status, contrasting it with their own quiet, steadfast support from the shadows.

I Am Here in the Shadows

And I hear your unspoken thoughts

It is a little too early to celebrate my departure or to roll out the valedictory drums ’cause I am not really gone.

I am here in the shadows at the very edge, across the borders no doubt but not very far from where you are.

I hear your unspoken thoughts and listen to your justifications of your fear honed actions and the self-proclamation of your journey to herohood and how from being the victim you outmaneuvered all to win all the battles and though unpronounced became the neighborhood champ that was once a street tramp and still unacknowledged you saved the community from defeat and destruction.

I listen to you tell how I could have flown in bright colors and shared the podium with you if I took in your advice and because I did not I was quickly recalled by our ancestors and my years of service made abrupt.

You sound like my light dimmed so that yours could shine and I, rather than laugh out, like the idea of turning mine down low so yours can brighten the fields far beyond the horizons and from here in the shadows that seems to me like I’ve notched in one good deed
