I Am Bound

A tribute poem to Kabir’s, I Won’t Come

Constructed by writer in Canva

I am bound I am free I am rich I am poor

I’ll keep seeking my truth and hold myself to it

I’m thimble and I’m fountain I’m robin and I’m egret

I’m water and I’m honey I’m saved and I’m blessed

I’m lamb and I’m crook I’m shepherd and I’m grace

I’m whole says I I’m amidst the mourning and the chosen

I’ve written this poem as a tribute to Indian mystic poet, Kabir, and his poem, I Won’t Come, originally written in Hindi and translated into English by contemporary Indian poet, Arvind Krishna Mehrotra, in Songs of Kabir.

I read the first two stanzas of Kabir’s poem —

I won’t come I won’t go I won’t live I won’t die

I’ll keep uttering the name and lose myself in it

The words spoke to me, as did the remainder of the poem. I felt compelled to respond to them with words of my own. I decided to replicate the structure and the linguistic features of Arvind’s translation, including the simplicity of the vocabulary — copying, after all, is the highest form of flattery. 😍

My aim was to create something spiritual — uplifting — positive. The opening and closing stanzas of Kabir’s poem, being fashioned in the negative, ran counter to my objective, so I applied poetic license and made them affirmative statements.

This is my contribution to Paper Poetry’s Poemorama Part III tribute prompts in celebration of National Poetry Month. Many thanks to Suntonu Bhadra for enticing us with a beautiful selection of historical and contemporary poetry from around the globe. You can see for yourself here -
