I am!
A poem
Sound-deadening headphones on I sit in silence, absolute quiet No sound but the buzzing in my ears It feeds my soul.
The Bible says “Be Still… And know… That… I am… God.”
I am God?
Know that I am.
As I sit in silence The Universe speaks to me. What does it say?
I am!
As Descartes said: I think therefore I am.
Some days that is enough.
Other days I need more. I need joy and laughter, fun and play I need busy-ness Expression Lots of running around and doing this and that I need productivity and accomplishment Goals set and met Progress!
But then I need days of rest to sit quietly and ponder. On such days it is enough to know that
I am.
This poem was inspired, in part, by Holly Jahangiri’s “Just…Hush” and Terry Mansfield’s “Urge” which gave me the “urge” to write something. Also, I’ve been pondering that verse from the Bible, Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.” It has led me to practice being still and sitting quietly for 20 minutes or so and just being aware, not focusing on any thought, but just letting them come and go. It is a practice called “Centering Prayer.”
I do believe that God, the Universe or whatever you want to call The Divine, speaks to us in the quiet times. A while back I found myself sitting on a bench appreciating the sun and the water of the lake that stretched out before me. When I looked at my feet I saw something etched in concrete, half covered with sand and leaves washed up by ice and snow. I wrote about it in this poem.
