I almost died
I have never been so scared…
It was a few months ago. I was lying in my bed at night, worrying. I was at one of the lowest points of my life and worried about the future.
Suddenly I felt a pressure sensation on my chest, which became stronger and stronger. I almost couldn’t breathe anymore. Naturally, this frightened me, which caused my pulse to skyrocket. My heart was pounding. I was struggling to breathe.
Is it over? Do I have a heart attack?
I opened the window and tried to breathe in the fresh air as deeply as possible. After a few minutes, the symptoms disappeared.
A few days later I went to the doctor to have my heart and lungs checked. Everything was fine. Probably I had a panic attack, the doctor told me.
The chances of dying were rather slim after all. Sorry if I disappoint you. But for me, it felt like it could be over at any moment.
What is a panic attack?
A panic attack is a short phase of extreme suffering and extreme fear, which starts suddenly and is accompanied by physical and/or emotional symptoms, as was the case with me. When the attacks recur, it is called a panic disorder. This can even lead to an extreme fear of future attacks. In addition, it may be that sufferers change their behavior to avoid situations.
What causes panic attacks?
Panic attacks are caused by psychological problems such as anxiety disorders or depression and can occur as a reaction to certain situations. For example, a person with a fear of flying may be more likely to have a panic attack on an airplane. Such attacks are not uncommon. Approximately 11% of adults are affected. Fortunately, most do not develop a panic disorder and recover without treatment. If this is not the case, professional help is needed. For me, it has remained with the one time so far.
What can I do against panic attacks?
During a panic attack, it is important to relax. The best way to achieve this is through breathing. Concentrate on your breathing. Try to breathe in and out as deeply and slowly as possible. You can also talk to yourself and try to distract yourself.
There are some effective methods to prevent further panic attacks:
- Sports and exercise
- Positive thinking
- Mindfulness (for example with journaling)
- Going out into nature
- Relaxation techniques
- Sufficient sleep
- A healthy diet
- Talking about it
