Summary

A reformed book snob shares their journey from exclusively reading physical books to embracing the convenience and variety offered by a Kindle, while maintaining a love for traditional books.

Abstract

The author of the content confesses to being a former book snob, not because they discriminated against certain genres but because they insisted on reading only physical copies of books. This preference spanned across various types of literature, from pulp fiction to self-help. The transition to digital reading came reluctantly after their daughter gifted them a Kindle, which initially remained unused for a year. However, upon embracing the e-reader, the author discovered a new world of instantly accessible books, including advanced reader copies (ARCs), free books from Amazon, and obscure titles linked to their library card. Despite this digital conversion, the author remains devoted to physical books and would not consider abandoning them, yet they now equally value their Kindle as a life-changing tool.

I admit it — I’m a recovering book snob, just not in the way you’re thinking. I read everything: trashy romances, out-of-print potboilers, gimmicky self-help books, you name it. But in the past I always made sure I had a physical copy of the book. When my daughter bought me a Kindle…I was…reluctant, so much so that it sat in a drawer for a year. It took me that long to realize I loved it. Kindle has indeed changed my life. I now get access to hundreds of ARCs, not to mention free books on Amazon. I’ve connected my Kindle to my library card and have read dozens of books that way. I’ve also bought obscure books on topics nobody but me is interested in and I can access them instantly. Will I ever give up “real books”? Hell, no. But don’t mess with my Kindle.
