I Achieved One of My Dreams Just by Doing One Simple Thing Every Day

You only need one hour a day

A grand total of $4,222. +$150 every day. Every morning when I checked my earnings, I was amazed. All because of one article. One article that I wrote without even thinking that it would be the one that would work out first.

I now earn a living from my writing. I’m among the top 1,000 writers on Medium. I write every day about whatever I want.

I didn’t have to do anything else but show up every day. This article was my first success, and a great lesson in perseverance, commitment and trusting what the future had in store for me.

Whatever your project, your goal, your objective, all you have to do is show up every day. I’m serious.

I put in 200+ hours of work without the slightest hint of success

I’ve been writing on Medium since December 2019. English is not even my first language. I combine this with my freelance work, and at the time with my very demanding photography school too. I had never written anything other than articles for my clients.

I achieved that just by not giving up and showing up a little each day, for 1 hour each time.

I started because I felt like it was a great opportunity to become a real writer. Someone who not only writes for their clients but also has fulfilling personal projects. I first set a goal to write an article a day, no matter what. I held to that goal for several months. I remember waking up earlier to write before going to school or writing right after getting home from a party. It wasn’t always easy.

When this story went viral, I had been writing for 6 months. Without any success. 6 months is 140 articles. Over 200 hours of work.

That’s a heck of a lot.

Just keep showing up

Once or twice, I thought about giving up. I felt like I was wasting my time. I thought I had more urgent things to do, like writing my thesis or trying to find new clients for my business.

But something inside me told me not to. I couldn’t bring myself to give up. Not after writing those 140 articles with all my heart. Plus, I was convinced that something great was going to happen. It just needed a little time. Success doesn’t happen overnight.

I think that’s really what this experience taught me: keep showing up. That one thing has so much power, much more than you imagine. You don’t have to work 5+ hours a day on something to be successful. All you need to do is show up a little bit every day, write a few words, with authenticity, thoroughness, and honesty, and let time do the work.

If I can do it, you can do it too. There is no magic trick. No shortcuts.

Just show up and do your best.

This works in almost every area of life. It’s better to show up for an hour at a party you’re invited to than not to go at all. Your social life will be better for it. Better to go to the gym for 30 minutes than not to go at all. Your body will thank you.

The bottom line

It’s the sum of all your little efforts that will lead to big things. If you go to the gym for 3 hours today but don’t go the rest of the week, then you’re screwed. You’ll get sick of it, and the results won’t come.

A little bit every day. That’s the absolute key.

Just imagine what you want to achieve. Then find one thing you could do every day to get closer to it. Even if it’s a 10-minute action. If you want to write a novel, set a goal of writing 1,000, or even 500 words a day. That’s what I’m doing now. After a few months, you’ll have a book.

Find that one little thing, that one little commitment, and stick with it. I guarantee you good things will happen.
