Hurting Hearts Do Heal
A Poem
This poem is an offering from a prompt by Annelise Lords Is Kindness Enough?
This Prompt is asking: If kindness isn’t enough to change and improve a heart, what will?
Be creative, innovative, and truthful too. Write a poem to show how imaginative you can be.
She was stoic, bitter, and afraid to love again,
Within any relationship, she just could not win.
It seemed that each person she tried loving,
Were unkind — she would eventually discover.
The people she thought were solid and intact,
Friends too were fakes only trading this for that.
Sharing her kindness did not seem to attract,
Persons who truly reflected her kindness back.
While shopping she met a lonely empathetic man,
At her, he smiled, but she mean-mugged him on demand.
Why’d he watch her as though he already knew,
She was lonely, but he’d probably hurt her too.
She walked quickly to be out of his sight,
Never looking before attempting to cross at the light.
All her urgent rushing did not lose the man,
He called out “Miss, Miss!” while waving his hand,
“Stop right there!” he yelled to her loudly,
His warning alarmed her, she halted to a degree.
“What do you want?” she irritably hissed,
Just as a loose wheel passed, she’d barely missed.
It rolled forcefully across the street in her path,
He’d just reached her in time — holding her tightly in his grasp.
Valiantly he’d saved her from impending danger,
Although grateful, but did not curb her anger
“I'm sorry, I tried to save you”,
Speaking directly to her, he was being true.
She was quite shaken, and a bit unglued,
Embarrassed, head spinning, and confused.
Legs wobbly, heart beating loudly, she coughed,
The gentle kind man still did not walk off.
He held her steadily, but to her, he was too close,
Docile he coaxed through her panicking episode.
Not leaving her as he waited for her to relax,
Adjusted her shoulder strap, he calmly stepped back.
He’d saved her when she was being mean,
He smiled again, his eyes and demeanor serene.
Years have passed he still holds her close,
Waits for her, pulls out chairs, and opens doors.
His kindness — though she rarely ever mentions,
Has dissolved her doubts and mean intentions.
Her heart matches his, loving and kind,
Strength is in kindness, she keeps that in mind.
Loving kindness applied to any heart that’s hard and cold —
Can heal it — and console many scarred souls.
This poem tells the story of a woman who has been hurt in the past and is afraid to love again. She meets a man who shows her kindness, but she is initially suspicious of him. When he saves her from danger, she realizes that he is a good person and her heart begins to soften. The poem ends with the message that loving-kindness can heal even the most scarred hearts and souls.
