Hurry! There Is Still Time To Save Your 2024 From Going Off The Rails.

The secret to not falling off the wagon

If you want to go fast, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

It’s January 7th and truth be told, I am already flagging. But I am not worried about my waning motivation because I have this 1 thing.

What about you?

Are you still going strong, or have you noticed yet again, that there was no magical internal change that occurred the moment the clock struck midnight on January 1st?

If you can already see your New Year new-me motivation waning, and your resolve to change is already weakening, you need to do this ASAP to recover your energy.

Support.

Get some support.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

— African Proverb.

Consistency on your New Year goal comes from getting support. It’s that basic. Either a 1-way support or a bilateral support where you are both the supporter and the supportee.

Accountability, and one that is firm and insistent, is how you can sustain yourself all year long.

It’s normal for our interest to peak and wane. It’s the rhythm of life.

But how then do we make sure we are not sliding right off the wagon when our motivation cools?

How can we prevent the periods of low motivation from stretching into a 1-year-long redundancy, while we wait for New Year 2025 to come around so we can be motivated again?

How do we stay the course?

We re-heat our motivation by getting support in the form of an accountability partner.

An accountability buddy.

As I said, my motivation is waning, just like yours, but I am not worried because I have a scheduled call with my accountability buddy this weekend. Then there is going to be another call roughly a week later, and a week later and the week after.

Staying motivated is like having clean teeth, you have got to brush every morning. No matter how well you brushed yesterday, you still have to do it all over again. And that’s where most people fail.

They think that if they have very clear, concise, SMART goals, and they have a very strong why for the goal, then all that hard work will see them through the rest of the year.

Unfortunately, motivation wanes and you need to get a regular refill.

People

Ali Abdaal’s book, Feel Good Positivity, pointed out something very poignant. We get energy from 3 different sources — Play, Power and People.

Motivation depicts our level of energy, and one of the ways we recharge is by seeking motivation from other people. Connecting with others.

Napoleon Hill depicted a similar idea and tagged it as a ‘mastermind’. I like the word mastermind cause it sounds like a ragtag team of supervillains who meet from time to time to plot how to steal the moon or other wild endeavours.

That’s because people are an amazing source of energy.

Now that can very well be virtual sources, books, audio, podcasts. I am a sucker for a David Goggins podcast and my wake-up alarm in 2023 was one of J.T.’s famous wake-up yells.

But having real-life people invested in your goals for the year can have a more profound effect than virtual support.

4 ways an accountability partner helps us stay consistent

  • As a reminder — because we all so easily lose sight of the goal and the task and the ‘why’ we even started.
  • As encouragement — either by words or even by action. Your accountability partner keeping at it can encourage you, and when they are slacking, you can encourage them by staying the course.
  • As a source of competition — there’s nothing as motivating as competing with the stranger on the treadmill next to yours who doesn’t even know they are competing with you. Or maybe they know. Maybe in their head, you are also their competitor.
  • As a deterrent to quit — you are more likely to stick it out when someone else is invested in your growth. Either because you don’t want to disappoint them, especially if you seek their respect or see them as a mentor. Or because you will feel embarrassed if you fail, especially if they are your colleagues or ‘junior’ to you.

Getting back on track

Having support is aiming to derive that energy from people. As yours dip, they refill you in different ways.

While independence has its advantages, dependency can work in several ways to keep us going. So get yourself an accountability partner today.

If you already have an accountability buddy, great. But have you checked in with them since the New Year?
