Music and food are among the things I love the most in life.
Do they go together?
Sure they do.
A date night, cooking up your favorite dinner and listening to your favorite tunes.
Snacking on your favorite candy while listening to music and relaxing.
A coffee shop with classical music playing in the background.
Those are all beautiful scenes to me.
Since they go together so well, there’s a writing challenge going around that’s all about songs and food.
I love it so much that I’m jumping on board, even if I am a little bit late to the party!
Here is my list of musical foodie songs. ❤
1. Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie — Jay and The Techniques
I am an oldies lover, so this was the very first song that came to mind. Released in 1966, it’s just a sweet and fun song to groove to. I remember my dad singing this all the time when I was young.
Ready or not here I come
Gee that used to be such fun
Apples peaches pumpkin pie
Who’s afraid to holler I?
That’s a game we used to play
Hide and seek was its name
2. I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) — The Four Tops
Another childhood favorite of mine, and another oldie but goodie! It was a hit in 1965, and The Four Tops went on to record so many other great songs like “My Girl”, “Baby I Need Your Lovin’”, and “It’s the Same Old Song.”
Songs like these one make me feel so nostalgic.
3. Green Onions — Booker T and The M.G.’s
This instrumental catapults me back to being a teenager and watching The Sandlot all summer long on repeat. It’s upbeat, fun, and makes me yearn for my younger years.
4. Cake by the Ocean — DNCE
I guess I’m in a summer mood today, which is actually odd for me. This is one of the first songs that my kids would play that made me stop and say, ok…I can give their music a chance.
I was always so dead set on teaching them all about older music that I wouldn’t give theirs a chance. I’m a lot better about that now, and in fact, I love a lot of today’s music. That’s something I never thought I’d say.
This song is always on our vacation playlists now.
5. American Pie — Don McLean
A pie theme as well?
This song always makes me stop and think about life. It’s written about The Day the Music Died: February 3, 1959, when three young and extremely talented musicians, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, and Buddy Holly were tragically killed in a plane crash. I wrote about it when I was first on Medium, you can read it here.
6. Blueberry Hill — Elvis Presley
I believe this was originally released by Fats Domino, but I can’t have a list of songs without mentioning Elvis. ❤ I love his version of Blueberry hill! Give it a listen and let me know what you think.
7. Pea — Red Hot Chili Peppers (Caution; language)
I remember when I began to rebel a bit, as many teens do. I bought this album not knowing much about it at the time. When I heard this song, I laughed and laughed at the absurdity of it. Is it even a song? Ok, I guess it is, but it’s a ridiculous one.
Anyway, I played it SUPER loud constantly in our teensy little apartment just to make my parents mad. This went on for a few weeks until I couldn’t handle the song anymore.
It still makes me laugh when I think of it. Just beware; there is a lot of not-so-nice language, if you choose to listen to it.
8. Candy — Mandy Moore
Ah, the Britney and Christina days. During this craze, one day the adorable Mandy Moore emerged like a beautiful butterfly. I totally wanted to be her. She was too cool, and my friends and I had her dance from this video down perfectly.
I think we were convinced that if we performed it enough times in my side yard, cute guys would absolutely drive up and ask us out.
It never happened, in case you were wondering.
9. Candy Rain — Soul for Real
Another time machine to my teenage years. I think this was the first band I ever had a crush on. They were great vocalists, very smooth, and had great style. Unfortunately, I don’t remember them having many hits after this one.
10. Chicken Fried — Zac Brown Band
I am NOT much of a country music fan. However, I’m including this song because my husband always told me it made him think of me when we were first dating.
He lived in Buffalo, NY and I was a small-town girl in the Midwest. All he wanted was to get out of there and move here with me. It took some time, but we got there.
The lyrics are actually pretty sweet.
Well it’s funny how it’s the little things in life that mean the most
Not where you live or what you drive or the price tag on your clothes
There’s no dollar sign on a peace of mind this I’ve come to know
So if you agree have a drink with me
Raise your glasses for a toast
To a little bit of chicken fried
A cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio up
Well I’ve seen the sunrise
See the love in my woman’s eyes
Feel the touch of a precious child
And know a mother’s love
I hope you enjoyed my list!
