Summary

The website content discusses the ecological and economic impact of rabbit overpopulation in Australia, initially introduced for hunting, which led to the construction of extensive fencing and the eventual use of a virus to control their numbers.

Abstract

The article details the unintended consequences of introducing rabbits into Australia's ecosystem by a businessman in the 1850s for hunting purposes. Despite their initial non-native status and minimal impact, the rabbit population exploded in the late 1870s, causing significant damage to agriculture and the environment. Efforts to control the rabbits, including hunting and building barriers, proved ineffective due to the rabbits' high reproduction rate and ability to breach defenses. The situation escalated to the point where a country-wide fence was constructed, becoming the longest in the world, yet it failed to stop the rabbits. Eventually, a virus was introduced to reduce the rabbit population to manageable levels, allowing farmers to reclaim their land. The article underscores the inability of humans to control nature, emphasizing that while we can interact with and adapt to the environment, our interventions can lead to severe, long-lasting impacts.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that human actions, such as introducing non-native species, can have far-reaching and unforeseen negative consequences on ecosystems and economies.
  • Rabbits, while seen as cute and kept as pets globally, are portrayed as pests in Australia due to their destructive impact on the local environment and agriculture.
  • The article conveys a sense of futility in trying to control nature through human-made structures, as evidenced by the rabbits' ability to overcome the extensive fencing efforts.
  • The author implies that nature has a resilience and balance that humans cannot easily disrupt, as shown by the eventual success of the virus in controlling the rabbit population.
  • There is an underlying message that humans must learn to coexist with nature, rather than attempting to dominate it, to avoid such ecological disasters.
  • The use of a virus to control the rabbit population is presented as a last resort after all other methods failed, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the lengths to which humans must go to rectify environmental imbalances caused by their actions.

Humans can consume and co-exist but can never control Nature

Nature is like a kaleidoscope it just reflects the actions which you input to it. Say you plant a tree it gives back fruit and shelter. Burn a tree it gulps some more oxygen and spits carbon back.

I am going to cover one of such kind examples from the past which happened in the Australian continent. How a Bunch of bunnies escaped into the wild has created a huge impact on the environment affecting various life even after a couple of centuries.

There is a huge number of people out there who like the cuteness of rabbits. Which are candidly addressed as a bunny. Their gorgeous looks add more pleasantness and melt the hearts of people staring at it. Can’t deny the fact that there are a lot of people growing it as a pet in their house.

Would you believe that…. it is considered as pests in one part of the world. Where it causes significant damage to the economy by damaging the eco-system and agriculture. This blog we are going to see how a thing which is admired and accepted by most of the humans is considered not so good for a set of people, based on their situation.

Yes, we are going to see about the Rabbits invasions in Australia on how it led to the continent and the impacts it created on them and how it leads to the invasions that helped them to curb this assault and save the environment and the economy that depend on the agriculture.

First thing first Rabbits are not the native bread of Australia they were not seen commonly in the early 1800s however they were introduced in 1850s by a businessman who arrived late to Australia has released some rabbits for hunting sport while some of them managed to escape didn’t create much of damage or the attraction until late 1870s.

However, in the late half of the 70s population of the rabbits has excelled in a huge number that it started creating issues for the farmers as it started pelting all some of their vegetation. There were times people have tried to hunt it down and sell it in the market. However, it is just a matter of time it has become an uncontrollable number and started to have an impact on the economy that is dependent on Agriculture.

It has been believed that one of the major factors for this enormous growth rate of rabbits in Australia could be due to the environmental conditions that favored the bunnies or could be due to the less number of predators that depend on these rabbits.

It went to a situation where people of Australia have decided to build some walls around their farms to prevent the entry of rabbits. But this effort didn’t work out well as the wall covering a kilometer distance was easily crossed over by rabbits within minutes.

At one point in order to restrict the movement of this massive rabbit army and to save the farms and farmers. The government has built a huge wall across the entire country. This wall has become the longest fence to be built in the world.

Thanks to the small size of the rabbits and their tireless effort towards survival it has even breached the longest wall across the country and continues to destroy the farmlands and crops.

There were extensive study and research programs have been carried out In this combat towards the rabbit there are no other options left other than introducing a virus into the rabbits which have brought down the rabbits population to a controllable number and finally the farmers are having their land back to farm as they used to earlier.

Think of this problem which has spanned across two centuries could have been possibly triggered by releasing some rabbits into the land for hunting.

The one thing that stands out to me in this whole saga is that nature knows how to retain its position there is no way that humanity can control nature you can either consume some of the things you are allowed to and learn to co-exist with it. A small change forcefully caused to the environment can cause an exalted level of impact or changes.

Thanks for your time in reading this and see you in the next blog…

Take care and stay safe.
