Summary

The content discusses a reflective exploration of the significance and personal connection one has with the color purple, as inspired by the "Hue Questionnaire Writing Prompt" created by Paul Combs.

Abstract

The article delves into the author's relationship with colors, particularly purple, through a series of introspective questions. Originally conceived by Paul Combs, the "Hue Questionnaire" is designed to probe beyond superficial preferences to understand the psychological and emotional resonance of colors. The author shares that while black and white hold a special place due to their contrast and aesthetic appeal, purple has become a significant color after the passing of a loved one. The piece reflects on the cultural and personal meanings of purple, its association with royalty, comfort, and unfortunately, stereotypes. The author disputes the gender-specific connotations of colors, emphasizing the absurdity of such associations. The essay concludes with the author pondering the philosophical question of identity and color, considering the idea of auras and the fluidity of color symbolism, and invites readers to contemplate their own color identity.

Opinions

  • The author has a deep appreciation for the contrast and aesthetic of black and white but chooses purple as a favorite color in response to the writing prompt.
  • Purple is seen as a color of royalty and comfort, with personal significance heightened after the author's boyfriend, Joe, passed away.
  • The author rejects the idea that colors, specifically purple, should be associated with gender or sexual orientation, finding such associations baseless.
  • There is a belief that the symbolism of colors is not fixed and can be subjectively interpreted, as seen with the author's friend who perceives individuals' auras as colors.
  • The author encourages others, including specific individuals mentioned at the end of the article, to engage with the "Hue Questionnaire" and share their own insights on their color identity.

Paul Combs came up with this writing prompt a few months ago and I had it sitting in my folder. I am just now getting around to it. You can find the original prompt along with his answers here:

Instead of just asking what your favorite color is, this is meant to delve farther into your psyche to find out what your color is, why, and what it means to you.

Hue Are You?

  1. What is your favorite color? Why? This is a difficult one to answer. I have always loved black and white. Some say that black is the absence of color and white is a spectrum of all colors. I like black and white because of the contrast and I just think it’s cool. For this challenge, I’ll go with purple. It’s a pretty color.
  2. Do you wear this color? How often and when? I do wear this color, but not often. I have maybe two or three shirts that are purple. When? No particular time. Just whenever I feel like it.
  3. What does the color suggest to you? Purple is the color of royalty. In the last place I lived, my bedroom walls were purple and it felt inviting. I feel like it is a warm and comfortable color.
  4. What does it not suggest to you? Purple has been linked to being gay, and although I am, I don’t see it as such. If you think about any color, it’s pretty ridiculous to assign it to any gender or group. For years, people have used pink for girls and blue for boys. Why? Pink is simply red mixed with white. Just two colors blended. Why does this blending of colors suggest femininity? There is no reason, as far as I know.
  5. How long has it been your favorite color? Purple was the favorite color of my boyfriend, Joe. He died in 2019 and I sort of adopted it as my own favorite at that time.
  6. When does it not work for you? I can’t think of any reason that it doesn’t work. I think it works anywhere in different shades.
  7. How does the color relate to you, or you to it? Are you this color or is this color you? Some sources say that purple symbolizes things like mystery, creativity, affection, and spirituality. It sounds like no one really has an answer and they make up what they feel like. I don’t view myself as a color. I have a friend who sees individuals’ “auras” as colors. I believe she said that they change depending on emotion and things.

So now I ask, Hue Are You?

It’s been so long, I don’t know who has or has not done this. Brett Jenae Tomlin, Benighted, Keeley Schroder, Adrienne Beaumont, Kerry Purvis, Ruby Noir, Pluto Wolnosci, NancyO, Bruce Coulter, Paula Shablo, J.S. Phillips, Julia A. Keirns, Natalie, Lu Skerdoo, Randy Pulley, and The Sturg.
