Our Government Does Not Want Us To Survive.

Tragedies happen all over the world, all the time. It is one of the most awful things about life that you have to come to terms with as you grow older. For those of us who are empathetic, if we internalize every tragedy, we would never survive a single day. No can absorb that much pain and survive. But sometimes, something tragic happens and it puts you in space, where no matter how hard you try, it touches your heart.
The tragedy that touched me was the Sandy Hook Mass shooting. I was at work when I heard about it and after I came home to my significant other and our daughter, who was nearing three years old at the time, it all really hit home. And it has continued to hit home year after year, because two years later, my own child was a five year old, sitting in a kindergarten class, with bright, trusting, mischievous eyes. And her father and I like every parent sent her to school having to trust that she will be safe from the evil that people can do. And so far she has been, but those children at Sandy Hook were not.
So on that day, as I watched CNN, back when they were my news go to, I watched them spam the same footage, and have the same discussions about calls for gun reform in the United States. I thought to myself, as I sniffled and tears streamed down my face that now this country would do something. Some asshole with a gun walked into a elementary school, sullied a place of learning and destroyed babies; destroyed those babies who would be ten and eleven years old this year. Surely, as a country, our representatives will put party politics aside and save this country from another Sandy Hook. They did not. Our elected representatives failed to help the citizenry, and of course, I was saddened, but unfortunately, not surprised. I had to realize that if the slaughter of kindergartners was not enough to seed the need to do the right thing in these people than nothing will. And now five years and countless mass shootings later, we all can see that I and so many others were right. Our representatives were worthless then and they’re worthless now.
The sad basic truth is that outside of politics, race, sex or any other news worthy buzz word flung around on a daily basis, our elected representatives do not want us to survive. And I do not mean us women, I do not mean us African Americans, and I do not mean us poor and under-served, I mean us, the citizens of the United States. They do not want us to survive.
During the 2016 election, many people, millions of people bought what Trump was selling and he was elected as the 45th president of the United States. This is old news, but whether they voted for him because they are reality TV junkies, racists, misogynists, xenophobic or just plain stupid, he and the rest of congress will continue to take from us because they are apathetic and greedy, who have sold out their soul to make some money. And those who chose number 45 will suffer along with the rest of us.
Am I being extreme? Cynical? Let me lay it out for you and then you can decide.
The war on drugs which started back during the Nixon Administration has ruined and cost more lives than the Vietnam War. People with addiction are treated as criminals and prosecuted instead of being medically treated. With so many countries having legalize drugs and showing positive results for their citizens and the economic bottom line, one would think that the U.S. would be eager to get on board. But our survival does not serve their bottom line, which is their own personal wallets. If drugs are legalized than addicts cannot be wrongfully imprisoned for use, minorities cannot be wrongfully imprisoned for minor possessions and for profit prisons would be defunct. It’s far more lucrative to take parents from children, decimate lives and provide more meat for the grinder.
Marijuana has been a schedule one drug for fucking ever, despite the evidence that shows how well it helps epileptic children and people suffering from the effects of cancer and the effects of cancer treatment.
Kratom, an all natural herb used for chronic pain relief, as an alternative to opioids, as well as increasing focus, is now a schedule one drug , too. Suddenly, the FDA cares about the deaths of 26 people that had the herb in their system, although it had nothing to do with their demise. They do not want people to try and help themselves. They want them to have to turn to opioids for pain management in order to keep pumping money into big pharma, who pumps money into politicians, who make sure that things like Kratom are unattainable.
The examples of others countries concerning universal healthcare are scoffed at and ignored, so that the health insurance companies can keep us paying into them, so that they can deny us when we’re sick, or be so useless that laying at home and dying of the flu is the only alternatives.
The FDA allows Monsanto to feed us genetically engineered, high fructose corn syrup sweetened, maltodextrin laced poison so that they can make a dollar, and those dollars are spread around D.C. so that they can have paid permission to insure our demise.
And last but not least, there are the guns. People are people. They’re going to want to kill somebody for something always, but easy access to assault weapons makes it easier to accomplish. I do not have to get into this anymore, the evidence is shown every two days, as bodies drop all across the country.
With all of this being said, my only conclusion is that our representatives do not want us to survive. Think about the gravity of that. We listen to them, vote for them, pay for their healthcare, allow them to feed their families on our dime and they do nothing but strive to see all of us go down.
Typically, I like to add a ray of sunshine to a post like this. Some silver lining, or upswing, but there isn’t one. I see no way out. I see no way through. Those running for office can’t be trusted. They carry the flag of change and justice and once they get to the promised land, all of those promises are null and void. I don’t know what’s next. But as you all can clearly see, if the blood of blameless kindergartners was not enough to galvanize action, then the blood of the rest of us will be an inexpensive price for them to pay.
