Howth, Ireland
Dublin’s Best Kept Secret

About 14 kilometres and an easy bus ride from Dublin’s city centre is one of my favourite places on Earth, a picturesque fishing village called Howth. I stumbled upon it quite by accident and ended up loving it so much, I extended my trip just so I could spend a week there.
Howth has something for everyone, stunning scenery, rich history, good food, and salty sea air. Oh, and the people are as warm and friendly as any I’ve ever met.
Great Golf — Deer Park Golf Course:

I’m not a huge golf fan. And I’m not a very good golfer, but who cares when THIS is the view from the course! And, it’s on the grounds of the historic Howth Castle.
For those of you that do like golf, the Deer Park course is a Par 72 with generous fairways.
Howth Castle:

If you’re into history, Howth certainly won’t disappoint. Just outside the village centre, stands Howth Castle. It has its origins in 1177 but has undergone a series of renovations over the years, most notably in 1778 which gave the castle its current appearance.
The castle grounds house not only the Deer Park Golf Course but also the Howth Castle Cookery School, which offers a wide variety of classes in the castle’s 18th-century Georgian kitchen.
There’s something so humbling and awesome about being around such ancient history. Coming from Canada, a relatively young country ( almost 155 years old), this was a rare treat indeed!
Stunning Scenery:

Enjoy hiking? If so, be sure to check out the gorgeous hiking trails near Howth Castle. Rolling hills, lush greenery, wildflowers and views of both Howth Harbour and Ireland’s Eye.

If seascapes are more your thing, Howth won’t disappoint. Just look at this gorgeous rugged coastline!

While you’re there, be sure to stroll the boardwalk, check out the harbour and pop into the many quaint shops along the main street. And if you get hungry, there are plenty of dining options to choose from ranging from simple ice cream stands to fish and chip shops to fine dining.
And if you’re not too tired after all that, you can always grab a bus back into the city for some nightlife. Or, if you’re like me, you’ll stay put and enjoy the relaxed, natural beauty of Dublin’s best-kept secret. I can hardly wait to go back!
