Sore shoulders, stiff necks, aching backs, and tingling fingers might be hindering us writers from producing our best work
When it comes to posture, I can very well relate to not having the most ideal one. Even during my teenage years, my mom would tell me to straighten up. I have no idea why but most of my friends in school slouched. It was nothing unusual.
As years passed, I realized that poor posture was starting to affect me with whatever activities I was into. I began developing aches and pains that I thought happened to much older people dealing with the usual aging process. It was concerning to start feeling them at my age.
Many writers complain about not being able to come up with quality work, not because they run out of ideas, but mostly because they are focused on sore shoulders, neck pains, and even finger problems. Behind all these concerns is improper posture. We take it for granted, but it significantly affects the standard of writing we produce.
When we are uncomfortable or have to deal with physical problems, our clarity of mind decreases. It isn’t easy to concentrate and think clearly when we are not physically fit to do so. Our mental state is affected, which impacts the way we write.
If we take the time to learn more about the adverse effects of poor typing positions, we can find ways to correct them.
Aches and pains limit our ability to focus
We need to stay focused when we write. Ideas come freely when we are not distracted by outside elements. If we are experiencing shoulder and neck pains from improper posture, our concentration shifts to feelings of discomfort. This becomes a distraction and can result in a significant decline in quality or at least speed of our work.
Research that studies the differences of seating positions on repetitive stress injuries found that alternative positions and devices may offer improvement. These include writing in a reclined position.

“Understanding the benefits and drawbacks of typing from supine or significantly reclined postures can lead to alternate computer workstations that may decrease repetitive stress injuries and increase employment opportunities for people with chronic low back pain.”
Increased stress levels drain our cognitive function
Studies have shown that a person with poor posture is more likely to get stressed out easily. It leads to poor circulation, limiting the bodily processes, leaving us exhausted and worn-out. Stress lowers our energy, and we do not have the strength to think, let alone write. Writing requires that we are in the right state of mind to produce something good.
“As the body is flooded with stress hormones, learning, memory, attention span, and our ability to focus are all affected,” writes author and writing coach Colleen M. Story.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome makes writing challenging
Yes, we can develop carpal tunnel syndrome from poor posture. This is a condition that not affects not only writers, but also other people who use their hands as a profession. The symptoms are tingling, numbness and pain experienced in any finger. Our incorrect typing position can lead to this and affect the quality of our writing.
Once again, it boils down to losing focus when we are bothered by our discomfort. We try to concentrate on what we want to put down, but our fingers refuse to cooperate. Apart from that, of course, it becomes more challenging to put those affected fingers to use.
Tension headaches constrain our creativity
Tension headaches are a common occurrence among people who have poor posture. When we sit on our desk and write, we put a lot of strain on your body. The tension that builds up from your neck and shoulders will eventually move to our head and lead to a headache. Once that develops, our creativity decreases, we lose focus, and all we want to do is lie down and sleep.
Our posture does matter, whether we sit or stand. It may even be tougher to maintain the correct posture when we are sitting down. Writing requires us to be in a seated position for more extended periods. For this reason, we need to learn how to be at our most comfortable and protect our body from the consequences of poor writing posture.
