Tips on how to be ready for the next natural disaster/protest in your city

How You Can Survive Civil Unrest

Are you ready for the next natural disaster/protest in your city?

If possible, stay at home

During civil unrest, especially on the third or fourth level, we may not be able to go outside to buy what we need, or we may find it more prudent to stay at home. The simpler answer is that by staying at home with everything you need, you can protect yourself during civil unrest. In the event of civil unrest, staying at home may be the safest option for security. [Sources: 5, 6]

On the other hand, staying at home can sometimes be riskier depending on the conditions. Unfortunately, although leaving the city may be safer, there are situations in which leaving the city may be impossible due to many situations. In that case, it is better to stay at home. [Sources: 6, 12]

What to do if you need to leave your home

If you need to leave your house in an emergency, try to bring as many supplies as you need with you. Make sure everything from your survival kit fits into your insect bag. It is a good idea to have this bag close at hand in case you feel like grabbing it and taking it with you. [Sources: 6, 7]

However, if you should never use these emergency supplies during civil unrest, you may still need to use them during natural disasters or even to pick you up after a job loss or accident. Being prepared for an emergency will help you overcome many unexpected situations.

Tips for emergency planning and preparedness

The importance of taking survival preparation seriously cannot be overemphasized. Preparing to survive must be taken seriously because you never know when a natural or man-made disaster might occur.

Source 11 has 33 awesome “Emergency Planning and Preparedness Tips”. I strongly urge you to check them out at your earliest convenience! Source 12 is equally helpful as it lists the 8 steps to prepare for civil unrest. Check out source 12 for more details. I have listed the 89 steps below for your information if you are in a hurry. 8 Steps to Prepare for Civil Unrest:

Civil Unrest: Prepare now and Know the Dangers

Know the Two Likeliest Scenarios:

How to be comfortable during the riot season

If you’re preparing for natural disasters, you should already be on your way to being comfortable during the riot season. Before civil unrest breaks out in your area, calm your family down and discuss survival planning. Review your workplace communication, response and evacuation plan for civil demonstrations. Avoid protests and other potentially volatile situations during civil unrest. In fact, I would recommend avoiding them even in good times, but if the going gets tough, being at a protest is one of the last places you want to be. [Sources: 13]

What happens when people get angry and decide they are going to riot, protest, or hold public demonstrations

The normal rules of society may not apply. Aside from the alcohol-fueled nonsense of sporting riots, civil unrest usually occurs when people feel that the usual ways to bring about change or deal with their grievances have failed. Whether it’s a peaceful protest that gets out of hand, or riots and robberies, civil unrest situations are daunting because the normal rules of society may not apply. [Sources: 11, 14]

The basics of what you should know ahead of time

Sources 3, 9, and 14 cover the basics of what you should know ahead of time and what to do at the moment, whether you want to avoid the riots or get involved. You will learn what signs to look for, what you can do to prepare for civil unrest, and when you should start your civil unrest survival plan.

Regardless of your preparedness, now is still a good time to take an inventory and consider not only how long the pandemic will keep us locked up at home, but also how civil unrest could keep us at home for a completely different set of reasons. [Sources: 3, 9, 14]

My absolute number one favorite guide to preparing for a civil unrest scenario is source 9. I have outlined very briefly what goodies you will find at source 9:

They have a great “Menu” link on the website and feature these topics:

The Best Civil Unrest Survival Plan

How To Survive Civil Unrest

* Action Planning

* Possible Causes

* Trouble Signs to Watch for

* “What if” Scenarios

Check out source 9 — it is well worth your time!

The first phase of your civil unrest plan

If the situation is getting worse and worse, it may be time to begin the first phase of your civil unrest plan. If you find yourself in a hot zone of unrest, be prepared to think for yourself.

Let’s face it, you can go about your business and be caught off guard at any moment. We are currently seeing an increase in violence across the country and ongoing social unrest. [Sources: 1, 5, 9]

Your plan of action

During any civil unrest situation, you really need to adhere to your preconceived “plan of action” and learn the best strategy to stay in place. In the midst of all this chaos, people get hurt or killed, so the goal is to establish a distance between you, including your family, and the situation as quickly as possible. If you find yourself involved in a protest or riot, stay on the edge of the crowd where it is safer. [Sources: 10, 11, 13]

If you need to travel to an area where there are many demonstrations, try not to go alone. If you are planning to take part in a protest, make sure you at least go with a friend and have the other’s contact information in case of a breakup. [Sources: 6, 10]

Surviving civil unrest at home is not that difficult because you have almost everything you need at home. Adequate food and water give you peace of mind during the busy season. [Sources: 6]

Your survival pantry

The food and water you and your family have for a month or more will be even better. Find out what a survival pantry is and why you need it. Build a survival pantry to avoid shopping panic and feel safe in the knowledge that your family has everything they need, no matter the emergency.

Understand human nature

To survive civil unrest, you need to understand human nature in order to make a plan to deal with it. What separates civil unrest from the normal public reaction is intention and scale. Civil unrest can range from a small group of people that are protesting peacefully, to a full-blown group of dozens or even hundreds or more people fighting in an apocalyptic scene with law enforcement using water cannon and tear gas. Such scenes typically include arson being perpetrated on a massive scale as well! [Sources: 2, 9]

Riots and protests can erupt anytime and anywhere-this is a terrible reality for all travelers. Whether you want to avoid turmoil altogether or want to keep the peace, these common problems are worth knowing because they can quickly make the situation unpredictable and dangerous.

During civil unrest, even the most favorable rallies or protests can quickly turn into the worst, especially if there are troublemakers in the group. [Sources: 3, 10, 14]

The takeaway — How law enforcement will contain the disorder

Photo by Sean Lee on Unsplash

Those causing the riots are looking for targets and they don’t care if they are people, pets, vehicles, or buildings. People will take to the streets and loot. Cars and buildings may be set on fire, graffiti will be painted on the walls, and the police or military will do everything in their power to contain the disorder by arresting or killing the protestors.

Anger over unpopular policies, a new war, a currency collapse, pandemic panic, food shortages, bankruptcy — all of this can trigger civil unrest, especially among populations already on the brink. [Sources: 2, 5, 11
