How You Can Live a Long Life Without Being “Old”

Hint: It’s easier than you think

Just about everyone wants to live a long time.

But no one wants to be “old”.

OK. I get that. Me neither.

But what if you could live that long life and still never be “old”?

It is more than possible and it’s in you to make it so.

I am not saying you get to look like you did when you were 22.

But I am offering that you can have the life, vitality, excitement, and joy you think are missing when you get old.

In reality, these years can be the most fulfilling and joyous of your entire life.

By the way, I am NOT talking about retirement. Because retirement is a primary cause of being OLD.

Get with the new reality

A quick exercise.

Note what you think of immediately after reading this next line.

“He’s an old man.”

Odds are you thought of someone in physical and cognitive decline. Set in their ways and doing all the stereotypical things we think of old people doing.

Someone who is retired (withdrawn) from achievement, ambition, relevance, purpose, and being a highly active participant in the flow of life.

Now, what do you immediately think of when you hear this?

“She’s older.”

As one person so perfectly answered, “I don’t know what to think because I don’t know who she is.”

EXACTLY!

You can no longer assume, presume, or stereotype who an “older” person is, what they have to offer, and what the life they’re living is like.

This isn’t just semantics.

Never getting “old “is there for each of us in the new reality of aging

It is a megatrend by which people who are “older” are reimagining, reinventing, and redefining what it means to be “older”.

It’s a megatrend that will, in the next few years become the new norm.

It’s in the demographics, statistics, and real-life examples.

A huge surge of older entrepreneurs starting up businesses with high levels of success.

Companies beginning to retain and attract older workers both out of headcount need and for their advanced skills, talent, and experience.

People in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond are pursuing a New Way Forward for themselves. Taking advantage of longer health spans and the ways of technology, business, and the world.

They’re viewing this time of “olderhood” as “My Turn!”

And by doing so, they never feel “old”.

It is the way those of us who are older now view ourselves, our life, and what we are doing with them.

It’s the new reality that offers us incredible health, opportunities for relevance, and ways to make an income and/or make a difference.

Self-perception is the key

The only time I perceive myself in any way shape or form as being my current age is when I look in the mirror. Granted. Ugh.

However…

I don’t feel mentally or emotionally anywhere near (within decades) my current “older” age.

I don’t feel physically anywhere near (within decades) my current “older” age.

In fact, my bio age is about 20 years below my chronological age.

I have the same drive and determination to learn, invent, impact, aspire, progress, and succeed that I did in my twenties.

I have had decades to elevate my knowledge, skills, talents, and wisdom to be more successful than ever.

It even means more to me now.

I am not “old”, nor will I ever be.

There is no way I am going to check out (retire, withdraw, surrender, retreat, recede, regress) of life.

If you think this is a matter of attitude and belief, you’re right.

But it’s an attitude on steroids. It’s an attitude that fuels and drives who I am and what I am doing. It’s an attitude that is delivering to me some of the most exciting and fulfilling days of my life.

And I’m just getting started.

I honor those who want traditional retirement. I respect those who have challenges that prevent them from pursuing this.

But, if you are blessed with a choice, how could you turn this down? How could you turn down a phase of life you thought would be the end that can actually be the beginning of something amazing?

When I have shared this with others, even those in their 30s, the reaction is one of amazement.

Not just the prospects of olderhood. They say it changes their outlook on life right now and in the near term.

So yes, it is possible to live a long time and never become “old”.

If you take good care of yourself and get past the ageist BS assumptions, presumptions, and stereotypes of aging, you will find that being “older” is one of the best things that ever happened to you.
