Summary

Improving productivity can be achieved instantly by adopting the "2-minute rule," which involves starting a task without distractions for a short period to overcome initial resistance.

Abstract

The article "How You Can Improve Your Productivity Instantly" emphasizes the importance of overcoming the initial hurdle of starting a task to enhance productivity. It suggests that the most significant barrier to productivity is the difficulty in getting started, a challenge comparable to beginning a workout or initiating a creative project. The article highlights the common pitfalls of procrastination and multitasking, such as getting sidetracked by messages and videos. To combat these distractions, the author recommends the "2-minute rule," a habit-forming technique popularized by James Clear. This rule involves committing to a task for just two minutes, free from interruptions, which often leads to sustained focus and longer periods of productivity. The article argues that by lowering the barrier to entry for starting tasks, individuals can reduce resistance and increase their output significantly.

How You Can Improve Your Productivity Instantly

All it takes is this one simple trick

One thing that destroys productivity more than anything else is our ability to get started.

We all know the hardest thing about going to the gym is actually putting on our running shoes and entering the building. Once we get there, the workout is usually easy and often quite enjoyable.

The same goes with writing or any creative pursuit. I find as soon as I sit down and start to write, ideas start flowing and I can usually write with ease. But the point of actually sitting down and writing is the bit that is a struggle.

Our brains like to play tricks on us and talk us out of getting started. So much easier not to sit down and do our lives work so we often take the path of least resistance.

Procrastination and multi-tasking

I usually take an age to sit down and write. First, I need to check WhatsApp for any cheeky messages. Then I will watch a Youtube video to get me in the zone. But Youtube knows what I like, so will recommend 6 absolute bangers, that I MUST watch immediately.

Then, before I know it, the whole morning has gone and I haven't written a single word.

How do I now combat this complete waste of time? It is so simple, but at times not so easy.

My own productivity has gone through the roof with this one simple trick.

One simple habit to increase productivity instantly

Set yourself the task of doing something, completely distraction-free for 2 minutes only. Surely you can last that long?

James Clear defined this as the 2-minute rule.

“When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do. The idea is to make your habits as easy as possible to start.”

Turn your phone off, listen to music with no lyrics and turn off notifications, separating yourself from all potential distractions.

Then attack the task that you want to achieve ferociously for 2 minutes. You can even set a timer.

What you will find is that you will want to continue doing this for more than 2 minutes as you will be in the zone — much more so than a motivational video will make you.

Give something a go for 2 minutes. And then see if you can last a bit longer. 2 minutes can often turn into 2 hours before you know it.

Forming the habit of getting started for two minutes has allowed me to remove resistance and increase my productivity.

Feel free to read those cheeky texts and binge youtube videos once you have finished your task to completion. At this point, you have earned it. And because you have earned this treat, you will enjoy it more.
