How You Can Help Someone Overcome Failure

The Thirty Day Writing Challenge

It’s time for June 9th prompt: Someone is amazed! “Wow, how did you do that?!” What did you do?”

When he was 9 years old, football and school were my nephew’s only passions.

He was the best student in his class and it seemed to be an easy task for him.

When he was not studying, he used to watch football matches. Actually he was not a very social child, but he seemed to be happy with his life. Getting good marks was a daily result for him, until one day, for some reason, he didn’t pass a test.

We were surprised and wondered what had happened, but soon started worrying because he reacted very badly. He became sad and spent more time watching tv. His passions faded. He seemed weaker, almost depressed.

It was his first failure. We told him that he would get better soon, and if he kept on studying like before, he would return to his previous results, but nothing seemed to help him.

I only met him once during those days. He was lying on the couch, wearing his pajamas. A sad child.

I sat by his side and thought about his other passion: football.

I reminded him about the last championship: his favorite football team was losing the final match, and in the end they won.

I talked about his favorite football player, who had ups and down but was still the best for him.

Did the champion give up? I asked. Do you expect him to give up?

I showed him how his idols were still the same in his heart, even after being defeated a few times. I knew he admired them for the way they reacted after making mistakes.

He stood up and started walking in the room. He seemed charged with a new energy. I guess he felt closer to the other champions who were used to winning, but lost and started again.

That’s when my sisters asked me: “Wow! How did you do that?!”

I was surprised too, I felt I had some magic power and felt more energetic myself.

Key Message: encouraging and supporting people who made a mistake can change your lives. When you see someone suffering because of failure, remind them about their passions, and be empathetic. It helps.
