How Yoga Improves Mental Health
(No, you don’t have to be flexible to start!)
About a year ago, I found myself feeling lost and unfulfilled in life. My sister recently started meditating every day and encouraged me to do the same. I tried meditating, but could never reach a quiet, calm mind.
Then I bought a book about yoga.
This taught me how yoga physically trains your brain and body to calm down. Just as you would train a muscle, yoga trains your brain to prioritize peace and mindfulness. It creates a space of quietness in this fast-paced world. Creating more peace in your brain results in less stress. For many people, less stress inherently elevates mood.
I knew this was the solution I needed. I have practiced daily ever since then. This was the peacefulness I was searching for.
At first, I had no idea where to start with yoga. As time has passed, I think yoga is nothing more than focused stretches combined with awareness of breath. The most important aspect about yoga is tuning in with your body’s breathing patterns. Focus in on what part of your body is being stretched. Take deep, controlled breaths. Maintain similar length breaths in and out. For example, breathe in for five seconds, breathe out for five seconds. Play a few calm songs or set a timer for however long you’d like. This YouTube video is a great place to start!
Yoga originated 5,000 years ago in Northern India, intended to create self-awareness, self-discipline, and elevate consciousness within the individual. It began as a slow, steady, mindful stretch. Throughout the years, yoga developed to be more dynamic in movement, focusing on specific poses and postures.
This practice is a proven treatment for depression while easing stress and anxiety.
Personally, yoga treats my depression, significantly decreases my overall anxiety, improves my daily motivation and maximizes my productivity throughout the day. I highly recommend trying yoga if your daily life feels repetitive, draining or unfulfilling.
