Night Call reflects Olly Alexander’s pioneering influence on modern pop in a new light and conveys the immediate feeling of being Years & Years’ quintessential album to date.

Throughout 11 songs, Alexander’s lyrics talk about heartbreak, and traditional ballads are virtually non-existent. Instead, we feel a highly subliminal psychosexual energy.

Olly takes us on a journey about embracing surrender and turning the table on abusive power games to regain our strength.

You will notice that Night Call is also a highly conceptual record by looking at the mermaid-inspired cover art.

Thus, the album becomes an ode to diversity, as we know how the singer struggled with his sexuality after experiencing homophobia while growing up.

The mermaid symbolizes mortal seduction. With a human head and torso and a fish-like tail, they enchant sailors with their melodious songs.

Olly explains how he wanted to identify with this gorgeous creature that lures men to their deaths, searching for love or a lover that is just out of reach.

“Many of the songs are a patchwork collection inspired by random memories and relationships, or men I’ve met.”

Indeed, mermaids can be regarded as creations of the unconscious and represent the snares and traps of passion, desire, and seduction, attracting and revealing the most primitive instincts of the human being.

We all remember how Ulysses had to tie himself to his ship’s mast in order not to give in to the siren’s charms. This is a metaphor that symbolizes protection against the illusions of passion.

Written over six months, Night Call shows Olly Alexander using his platform to push the boundaries of mainstream stardom.

Night Call blurs the boundaries between hedonistic fantasy and the reality of confinement, precisely because, as Olly says:

“I was writing from a fantastical point of view, enclosed in four walls. I wanted to take as much pleasure as possible in the music.”

Thanks to his hugely successful albums, the singer and actor has earned five Brit Award nominations, surpassed 4.4 billion streams worldwide, sold-out tours, and given triumphant concerts at London’s O2 and Wembley Arena.

Concluding Remarks

Night Call includes the subversive, euphoric, and ultimately upbeat singles “Starstruck” “Sweet Talker (featuring Galantis),” among other songs signed by Olly Alexander.
