How Writing Online is Fueling My Passion to Attaining Financial Freedom
We have the opportunity to create our ideal lifestyle, but it will require a mind-shift. Are you up for the challenge?
If your are like me, you’ve listen to a lot of people speak about how they made XYZ via the internet. It never mattered who said it or if its true or not, all were relaying the same message. This message was that it is possible.
The thing is this, it will require a bit of sacrifice to make it happen. It does not happen overnight. You have to figure out how you plan to do this and then actually execute on that plan.
And, this unfortunately is where many people fail at.
But who can blame them, your life before now has been steady. The traditonal 9 to 5 gig has made us a bit too comfortable. So comfortable that people are forgetting the roots of our history.
So, why make a shift?
It’s simple, we are at a time where we have the means to really create opportunities from anything. Technology has allowed a broader selection of options for others to choose from. Why not make use of it. We are also seeing things shift between traditional work vs remote work. Employers are the same as they were in the 60s. Most are just looking out for themselves.
Which is why you need to do the same for you.
It took me buying courses, and listening to more people talk about what they could do until one day it just clicked. I realized that I was becoming a hoarder of information. Just consistently scrolling, making a plan to start but never actually doing it.
I kept reading how people were taking the same thoughts I had created and turning into blog post, podcast episodes, tiktok videos and so on. They were just posting and building in public. And people loved it!
The other part was just history, we were made to create. When it’s all said and done, we should be living as what do we want our story to say.
This is my gentle reminder to push myself through uncertainity. I am not going to down the 9 to 5, because I was able to make some real money working it. However, I am also realizing that there is a cap. A blocker that can hinder you from growing, just because you got so use to other people telling you what to do.
I am here to share how I plan to shift that.
The Turning Point
Everything changed when I earned my first dollar online. I had been doing a few things for people for free and thought “um, I wonder can I make a quick buck doing this?” I heard about the freelancer platforms that brought creators and customers together, and decided to give it a try. And when I say a try, I was offering roughly $10, just to see if the idea would stick.
And it did.
Thats when everything shifted. I went from 5 orders to 10 and so on. What is crazy is that, it really wasn’t the amount that mattered but the realization that I had value that could genuinely earn money. We learn from experience and honestly if I did not make this shift, I probably wouldn’t had known its possible.
Which is why we are here, I want to share with you how I got started in hopes that helps you do the same.
Start With What You Love
Many of you may have some wonderful ideas but as like myself are causing yourself to get stuck. I get it really, but I also believe that we put unnecessary expectations on ourselves that keep use from starting in the first place. I want you to remove that feeling and begin with a new mindset.
I also want you to focus your first endevaor doing something you actually like to do. For me, I love helping people. I have a genuine admiration for it. This is also how I was able to excel at my job. So I figured, why not see if theres opportunity else where to help those in need.
We think that when starting something new we must start over. But in reality everything you need is sometimes right in front of you. So why, reinvent the wheel?!
Build Your Platform
I told myself that I do not need another course, or guy telling me that the opportunity is there. Instead, I just need to focus on showing up and delivering valuable content. And this is what my only goal is for this first half of 2024.
Show up and Show out
I am using a few different platforms, but medium is my first source to begin with. Mostly because the audience is already here, and its beginner friendly. Which allows me to get some practice in a bit. I recommend everyone to start on medium before going somewhere else.
Once you have a solid engagement and have an understanding of what you are trying to do, then only should you consider sharing your work on other channels.
Monetize Your Passion
When the realization hit me that my passion for helping others could actually become a source of income, it was like a dam bursting open with possibilities. Suddenly, every interaction, every bit of knowledge I had accumulated over the years, felt like it had tangible value.
The ideas started flowing so rapidly, one after another, that I found myself rushing out to buy another notebook just to keep up.
Realizing the opportunity to earn money through my passion for helping others was a significant turning point. It directly linked my skills and interests to a viable financial pathway, altering my approach to how I could apply my abilities professionally.
Scale and Diversify
Which brings the next point. I realized quickly that the first wave that introduce me to this online journey, may not be a long term thing. I used Fiverr to get started. And while most people speak highly of it, I believe its more taliored to those just getting started. Not those who are a bit seasoned. The reason is because Fiverr made its money by advertising that the platform is a cheap way to get resources.
While this message is not a lie, it doesn’t speak on the quality that you will receive from such expectations.
I can’t say all the time, because I was offering a huge discount just to get my name out there, and alot of people got to comfortable. It would take me a few hours to do things and I was doing it 7x less than my hourly rate for my day job.
Anywho, I do recommend though, if you are new to creating online service or products that you should defintely give it a try. But once you start making a name for yourself and begin receiving referrals then you may need to de-platform.
This is where diversification come into play.
Embracing diversification has been pivotal in achieving stability in my career. By exploring a wide array of writing niches, from technical articles to creative storytelling, I not only honed my craft but also significantly expanded my income avenues. Although I am not receiving as much just yet, I do know that if I keep showing up something will show for it.
Currently, I’m advancing this strategy by developing digital products and courses, aiming to enrich my portfolio and introduce new streams of revenue.
My advice for others in this scenario:
Expand your writing repertoire. Explore various niches and mediums. The wider your range, the more opportunities you’ll have. Consider branching into related fields like editing or content strategy to further diversify your income. Look at social platforms offering money for influence. I mean if your going to be on social media anyways why not make money from it?
TLDR
My journey from casual writing to making a living online has been transformative. What began as a personal hobby has evolved into a thriving potential for a career. Just know this…your writing can do more than just fill pages; it can fill your bank account. And although it may take time, Start today. You have enough experience to speak about. Learn through experience, focus on the art and deliver.
