How Writing Love Letters Made Me a Better Writer

The art of writing is possible for you to achieve but at a cost

I started dating in the early 1990s and my weapon of choice was writing love letters to my girlfriend. Over the years, I actually had a few girlfriends to practice my penmanship. Those days are long gone because of the internet.

If you want to improve your writing, try writing love letters to your significant other. Then you really get to put your emotion into your writing. You will be surprised how much your writing improves over time.

In the early 90s, the internet didn’t exist like it does today. There was no social media. Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, LinkedIn, and so on did not even exist. You didn’t even have a smartphone. All you had was a pen and paper.

There were these ancient things that people called typewriters. Those were reserved for school assignments. That also took away from your penmanship.

How you wrote, people could recognize who it came from. These days as you type on your phone or computer, the art of penmanship is gone. The art of writing may have taken a step back for many people.

Now you see memes, acronyms such as LOL, or the cryptic short sentences.

When I went to college, I left my family and high school friends as I went thousands of miles away. I wanted to see something different in life. That was also when I met my first girlfriend.

You could say I was a late bloomer. In life, that happens sometimes. You can’t rush life. Life will come to you on its own time and terms. Life teaches you patience if you choose to accept it.

When I left college during breaks, I pulled out my pen and paper and wrote away. When you are in love especially for the first time, your emotions truly come out. You start to write like you never imagined. Your English teacher would be shocked at the words you put on paper and think you must be copying someone else’s work.

The art of writing is there for you

Anyone can write but there is a cost. You have to put down your phone and get off of social media. Pull out a pen and paper and start to write.

Your first letter will be horrible.

Your second letter will get better.

Your third letter will get you closer to perfection.

But don’t let it end there. You should keep writing. Ignore the urge to send a text. Pull out the pen and paper and show your true emotions that have been hiding for years.

You may have to buy an envelope and some stamps as well. Surprise the love of your life. Let your words flow on paper instead of your mouth.

A love letter would be the least they would expect. When you write your letter, this is coming from your heart. The Hallmark card is an easy way out that doesn’t express your true feelings. A letter comes from your heart and not something typed on a paper for $4.99.

Your letter may not be a thousand dollar ring or a Coach purse. You will truly show your emotions. You will also become vulnerable.

Words you couldn’t say come out in your letter. You will take your relationship to another level. A level that has been lost for weeks or years.

This is the perfect time to work on your writing. Improve your love life. Depending on where your love life stands, this could possibly save your relationship. This may actually take your relationship to another level.

Just be consistent. Don’t make this like a one night stand.

Write often. Show your true self. Express your deepest feelings. They’re in there and the love of your life may not have even seen your other side.

If you’re writing your love letter for the first time or it has been years since your last one. This could be the best letter the love of your life will receive.
