How Writing Helps You Clear Your Mind
We have all found ourselves at some point in our lives in stressful situations that prevent us from continuing to enjoy our daily lives. Whether it is due to an excessive workload, family problems, or the unbridled lifestyle that today’s society makes us lead.
For that reason, it is convenient to know oneself, and to know which methods to use in each moment to be able to clear the mind.
But, the question is — Is it possible to clear the mind?
Well, it is very simple, it is not possible. If we go to the literal definition, clearing the mind, implies emptying it of all thought, in other words, leaving it blank.
I recommend you to try it, sit in your chair, leave the electronic device you are using and do not think. Come on, try it, I am waiting for you here.
As you will have been able to verify, it is not easy, the simple fact of trying not to think makes you think. It is as if I tell you not to think of a purple elephant, because your brain will automatically think of a purple elephant.
So, if I cannot clear the mind, what do I do?
Once we have understood that it is impossible to empty the mind of all thoughts, what we have to do is to use this to our advantage.
That is, focus our attention on things that will help us improve our mental health, and therefore, “clear the mind”.
To do this I will explain the technique that I use and that has worked best for me. I understand that there are more, and maybe something else works for you, but this is what works for me and what I recommend, since it is simple and does not require much time.
Journal:
Yes, I know that writing seems silly, and that keeping a journal is useless. But trust me, writing is one of the best ways to calm that head of yours that won’t stop thinking.
Think about your ancestors, and the lifestyle they led.
How do you think they spent their dead hours? Well, I’m sure they didn’t do it by looking at their cell phones.
Our brain needs time to digest all the things that happen to us during the day. But if we invest every minute we have in social networks, it won´t have time to achieve the rest it needs.
With this I am not saying that you should leave your cell phone forever, believe me, I know how complicated that is.
I just recommend that you take a notebook and a pen and write for 5 minutes. You can even write in the notes on your phone if you prefer. If you do this, you are giving your brain a pause, a moment of disconnection, a moment to reflect on things that have happened.
Believe me, if you have a problem, write about it, and when you’re done you may not have found a solution, but you’ll see how much clearer you see things.
What if I don´t know what to write?
You are probably thinking right now that you have nothing interesting to write about.
And trust me, you are not wrong, you certainly don´t have anything interesting to write about. But that´s the important part.
When you write in this way, you write only for yourself.
So don’t expect to write a novel, a poem or a revolutionary text, just let your thoughts transfer to paper and WRITE.
