Riposte Group's design philosophy emphasizes fostering a harmonious relationship between humans and nature through strategic branding and design for Pelant Nursery, which aims to enhance life quality.

Abstract

Riposte Group, a design firm, is dedicated to creating designs that promote societal well-being and environmental harmony. Their collaboration with Pelant Nursery, owned by Endang, an architect with a lifelong affinity for plants, exemplifies this ethos. The brand naming process led to 'Pelant,' derived from 'plants' and 'pelan' (meaning 'slowly' in Bahasa), encapsulating the brand's mission to nurture a deep connection between people and nature. Pelant's diverse activities cater to a wide audience, including plant enthusiasts, novices, and children. The design exploration resulted in a flexible brand identity centered around growth and vitality, with a logomark symbolizing a budding plant. The brand's messaging is reinforced through various design outputs, including icons, supergraphics, and an installation using corten steel, symbolizing the aging process in nature. The project reflects the collective passion of Pelant and Riposte Group to bridge the gap between humans and the natural world.

How We Design for a Better Relationship Betwen Human and Nature

One of the visions that we have in mind about designing within our firm (Riposte Group), is how we can utilize our design processes, to influence real change, concrete efforts, and impactful initiatives that can push our society’s life quality. However, finding real clients with this kind of vision, and who share the same mindset or world perspective, is truly challenging.

It is a seldom occurrence that we met a businesswoman like Endang (the owner of Pelant Nursery). She is an architect, that has fostered a close relationship with plants, and nature. Her intimacy with plant, have grown from way back, when she was a kid, spending most of her time in her parent’s nursery. Spending her childhood in a plant nursery has granted her joy, and a sense of comfort when she is surrounded by plants. These feelings, have ingrained her with a dream, or specifically, a question, “What if humans and nature can foster a better relationship, a closeness that benefits one and another?”

The Name, Pelant

Knowing the vision and dream that the owner and the brand share. Our first task is to create a proper brand naming. Yet after a few sessions of brainstorming, discussion, and consideration. We are settling for the name Pelant, which is derived from the word Plants, and Pelan (which in Bahasa means slowly). Accommodating their vision to introduce plants and help foster an intimate relationship between people and nature, we then develop a tagline, which is: “Pelan — pelan plan your plant” meaning slowly planning your plants. This tagline is a catchy tune that we develop to help cater to the message that we will be there, as a friend of those who would like to start growing, nurturing, and being close to nature through the act of planting.

The Product and Design Direction

Delivering the mission means that we need to communicate the brand to multiple brand audience. From adults who already fell in love with the world of plants, young enthusiasts who would like to try planting, and even kids whos the parents would like them to have their first contact with nature.

That is why Pelant have various activity and events, such as;

PPP — Plant Parents Pop Up, an event where plant enthusiast could bring their collection, and sells them, exchange, or simply discuss with each other about the plant

Main Sama Pelant (Play With Pelant) — a kid's activity club that let children play various activity on the outdoor area of Pelant’s Shop

Ecuagenera Pop Up — a Plant Pop Up Shop in collaboration with Ecuagenera, an international nursery with a mission

Having so many activities that appeal to many audiences, means that our brand should have flexibility in execution, but also focused on carrying the brand message forward. That is why we spend quite a time doing the brand design exploration.

The Design Exploration and Design Output

After various exploration, study, and brainstorming sessions, we’re focused on translating the main message of the brand, where “Pelant is a plant nursery that aims to make a real difference in our lives through one simple act; fostering a better relationship between humans and nature, through the simple act of nursing a plant.”

That’s when we make a decision for the logomark. We were inspired by the beauty, and vitality of plants. We then embarked on a visual journey to explore the diverse processes of growth from sprouts and decided to explore further the distinctive forms of growth that happens in the plant, gradually.

Slowly Sprouting, Pelant

For the main logomark, we chose to use the initials of the brand, P that stands for Pelant, and we make it to resemble a plant bud, that grows gradually.

We also created a sets of icons that can be used in each social media posts, three icons that resembles different stages of growth.

In order to promote the events, activity and further our relevancy with the younger audiences, we also develop a supergraphic in forms of stickers, each resembles the tools and equipment that we need to do plant nursing. Each of them are designed to be used as merchandise, so that it adds more value to the brand.

Even more, we’re fortunate enough to have the opportunity of creating an installation in Pelant. Together in a collaboration with Platform Architect, we create a series of monuments that embodies our brand vision with Pelant

Our Installation for Pelant, using a corten steel that ages with nature. It symbolizes our relationship with nature.

This project is a result of passion from both Pelant as the client, and us as the designers. We’re more than proud and happy with the results and are looking forward to more collaborations with Pelant, to help them foster a bond between humans and nature.
