Ukrainian Gun Roadster: Everything About Mykolaiv Police New GTA Style Cruiser
The roadster’s Russian DIY anti-aircraft gun assists the police in keeping Mykolaiv’s streets safe
Ukrainian GTA meets Mad Max DIY mods have gone viral on social media, and their latest ‘technical’ design looks rad. We’ve seen how the Ukrainian resistance makes the most of any vehicle they can get their hands on.
From farm tractors towing T-72s to Ukrainian troops parading a Russian IMV Tigr painted with blue and yellow.
Farmers salvaging heavy weapons from Russian tanks and APCs, then converting them to provide fire-support om roadblocks.
We’ve seen it all!
Gun roadster: built for speed
Still, I hadn’t seen the standard “technical” gun truck with an anti-aircraft machine gun during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Truck-mounted weapons are a part of war pop culture, and “technicals” are the vehicle of choice for resistance fighters in almost any conflict.
Armored vehicles and heavy artillery serve as the Russian army’s spinal cord. They are, however, slow and require a lot of logistics to keep running.
On the other hand, gun truck mash-ups lack armor but are light and fast and can pack a powerful punch. Even if it lacks precision, a light vehicle can be highly effective against helicopters and drones.
Furthermore, even if using AA-fire against infantry is morally questionable, seeing these trucks can scare the daylights out of foot soldiers who are afraid of being hit by a wave of flak.
The mounted weapons you see on these DIY gun trucks are actually of Russian design, as former Soviet heavy weaponry fits perfectly in the bed of a pick-up truck.
As a result, having these vehicles patrol the streets boosts the morale of resistance forces stationed at roadblocks because they know enemy aircraft will reconsider making a low pass. It also keeps the enemy’s head down.
Social media has been flooded with images and videos of the Ukrainian sporty version of a “technical.” A Russian NSV machine gun is shown mounted on a tripod in a silver roadster.
Instead of the usual civilian freedom fighter, the local chief of police is behind the wheel of the convertible patrolling the streets of Mikholaiv.
Gun roadster: weapon of choice
The NSV is about 200 pounds lighter than the old DShK with its wheeled carriage and gun shield. Thus it could still be mounted on this type of vehicle.
You can see how they removed the trunk lid from the BMW 6 Series roadster to make room for the NSV tripod. Because of its large caliber and fast rate of fire, this type of machine gun is primarily used as a short-range anti-aircraft weapon.
The NSV accepts 12.7x99mm NATO (.50 BMG) cartridges and was probably mounted on a Russian T-72 MBT before being salvaged and retrofitted into the trunk of the German 6-Series technical.
Final Thoughts
I can imagine that Bose sound system playing the Initial D soundtrack as the sky lights up with flak, keeping civilians safe from Russian rockets.
Time to put the pedal to the metal. Stay strong, Ukraine, and step on the gas!
