How to Write With More Power
As platforms like this continue to grow, it is becoming harder to reach your potential audience. That is not to say that your writing is bad, but it does mean that your writing needs to be something special.
As writers, our audience is starting to have a range of choices to pick from. On one hand, that is a good thing. We want our readers to continue to read, even if it is not our articles. After all, more variety allows them to value writing as an art and hopefully come back for more.
However, with more writers comes the problem of reduced scarcity. Not that you were ever the only writer in your niche, but it does make it harder to find you if there are more. Also, what if those writers are writing way more often than you are?
We have all heard that quality beats quantity, and that fact remains true, especially when it comes to writing. However, the urge can often be to publish more to grow the audience we always wanted.
From my experience, the articles that I have written with the intent to move the emotions of my audience have performed the best. And I do not believe that is a coincidence.
Yes, a good headline and subtitle matter. And do not forget a good image and tags. But what is going to keep your reader engaged is the words you have put on the paper. And with a more powerful piece of writing comes the increased chance of it being shared and read by more people.
So, before focussing on how to grow your following and formatting, I think our efforts as writers are best placed in what we do. And that is writing.
Have a Clear Message to Communicate
Before writing an article, do you know the one thing you would like your readers to take away? At the beginning of my writing career, I did not know the answer.
For many of us, the passion to write can often take us off track of what we seek to communicate. And although that is not always a bad thing, it can take away from the message at large.
If you are a writer, I have to assume that you are also a reader. If not, I would urge you to become one immediately. As readers, we often put dedicated time aside to read, and that time is precious to us. So, as a writer, we must ensure our readers time is not wasted.
Having a clear message gives your reader an indication of what they are going to get. That may be an answer to a challenging question posed in the article title or a bit of advice. Whatever it is, the message of the article must be kept clear throughout.
There is a reason why a picture tells one thousand words. It is because it is clear as day what is going on in the image. I imagine that my readers want to have their cake and eat it. They want the clarity of a picture but the experience of being led through a story that only writing can do.
Therefore, starting with a clear message you want your reader to take away will allow you to write with more purpose. You will be less inclined to go off track and, in doing so, write an article that is easy to remember.
Convince Your Readers
I have read through so many articles that have left me on edge. That is, they have left me thinking whether I should believe them or not. Now, in some cases, that can be a good thing. A piece of writing that is meant to spark thought would have done a perfect job if I was left thinking this.
However, for the most part, we want to engage our readers in a way that leads them through our train of thought. We want to take them on a journey with us through our thinking and how we perceive the world.
That is not to say we want to force them to feel like we are right. However, if you have a message, say it loud and clear and do not be afraid to show your reader why you are convinced of your beliefs and opinions.
Some of the most powerful articles I have read have made great claims and convinced me of their point of view. That does not mean I adopt their way of thinking right away, but it does mean it causes me to challenge the way I think.
You convince your reader by taking them through a journey of how you came to your conclusion. Explain to them the pivotal moment that changed your mind or the word of advice you got that helped you.
Our readers want to be connected to us. And they do that not just by reading our work, but by internalising the beliefs we have. Some of my regular readers do not share the same worldview I do, but they repeatedly come back for more. That is because I convince them of my thoughts, and they are forced to look at things from a new perspective.
A piece of writing that is convincing and challenges our views is often memorable. Not because we like to be challenged, but because it allows us to experience something new.
Believe in Your Writing
I am still trying to accomplish this one, but it is essential to writing powerful pieces. If we do not believe that our writing can change the life of others, then we have very little chance of compelling others.
Every time we sit down and write, we must believe we could be the difference in someone’s life. And it is this message I want to leave you with today. As a writer, every time you sit down to write, you could potentially change the life of one person. In fact, you might just change the world.
So, believe in your writing. You are only one powerful piece away from where you want to be, so keep going.
