Writing Medium articles that get indexed in search engines.

Focus on your topic-targeted title or H1 header, then the presentation. While providing quality, transparency, and optimized readability with the first 2 to 4 lines of text along with subheadings.

Create a balance with the keywords and search phrases when writing your Medium article title. Combine those principles with the written content of the first 2 to 4 lines of text. Along with the medium article subheadings.

That way you have a targeted Meta description.

But before we get to the finer, and rather simple steps and requirements. We like to offer proof of our claims first! It also so happens that this is a rather effective writing technique.

But with our current series of SEO articles and how to get your Medium stories indexed in search engines. We also learned quite a few tricks along the optimizing and testing strategies journey.

At the time of writing this Medium story, this particular post (Medium story Number 245). Was already indexed and took the first position on the first page of major search engines like Google and Firefox.

This particular Medium article (Why Am I Not Generating Sales Online?) only took 17 hours to reach page 1 position 1 out of 402 Million results as can be seen in the illustration below.

NOTE: You are more than welcome to enter this search phrase (Medium Story Title — “Why Am I Not Generating Sales Online?”) in your Google browser and see for yourself!

This first chapter will be handling the proof, while the rest of this article will take you by the hand. And guide you through this strategy making it easy to understand.

Below is undeniable proof of exactly where this article is showing up in search result pages for “Why Am I Not Generating Sales Online?”. Notice the time it was published (17 hours ago).

Obviously, keyword, search phrase, LSI keywords, and interest targeting is the undisputed “magic wand” for getting started. But we will get to all of that during the course of this article.

Notice the Meta description snippet, right above the article. Just beneath the search result volume. This is usually 2 to 3, or even 4 sentences of text, depending on your sentence length.

But we will get to that too, so keep reading, and be prepared to get your socks knocked off with this simplicity!

So, where did this Meta description, receiving preference from search engines come from? Well, as you can see in the illustration above, highlighted (what we believe is a search engine's highlight) is the text you see in the Meta description.

Notice how these highlighted sentences form part of the first 4 lines of text with the article's body opening. Strategic positioning of content, target keywords and search phrases is of paramount importance.

We came to this conclusion because the highlighted section does not show who did the highlighting. Truthfully, that’s just our conclusion because, like you, we too are just explorers.

Your presentation image is also of great importance and forms a paramount part of turning a scroll into a visitor.

As can be seen above, this article is displayed in the Medium feed. The text is focused on the centre of the image. Because with sites like Medium and search engines, the image gets cropped from both sides.

Step-by-step guide for writing Medium SEO articles.

Some of our written Medium stories even take up the first 3 positions in search result pages. As can be seen in the illustration below. This brings us to the end of proving our strategy, and now we can guide you through it.

There are a few important areas that you need to focus on, and they are.

Medium Story Title.

Medium Story Main Subtitle.

Presentation Image.

Content Subheadings.

Content Body.

Sentence Length.

Article Readability.

User Experience.

Load Speed.

Strategic Keyword Placement.

10 Areas where you want to focus on in order to offer the best results. For writing the kind of content that will draw the attention of both search engines and your Medium readers.

Step One — Open a Word document to write your Medium article on, that way you can also repurpose your content. We like using it on Patreon and LinkedIn as articles too. But you then want to change the titles, subheadings and first 2 to 4 lines of text a bit.

Step Two — Topic research. How many people would be interested in free and hosted affiliate niche storefronts? How many people would be interested to know how to write Medium stories that get indexed and rank in search engines?

Step Three — Focus on your Medium article writing topic in the title or H1 header. Use something that will offer an answer, a solution, some form of guide, or free stuff.

Mould your Medium article title based on that. Your article or Medium story title is where the “magic” begins! How many people want to know why they’re not generating sales? Just a thought.

Try to avoid “English Stop Words” with your titles and subheadings. This might in many cases be near impossible. Just do your best to use as few stop words as possible.

One most common English stop words is “the”, therefore, starting your title with the word “the” might not be such a good idea.

Step Four — Article Subheadings. Start your article with subheadings and then use those subheadings as a table of contents. As can be seen in the illustration below, these are a particular written Medium article’s subtitles.

Author account screenshot. The image screenshot was captured with “Paint 3D”. Shared by Deon Christie for demonstration and illustration purposes. The author assumes responsibility for the provenance and copyright. The author assumes responsibility for the authenticity.

The subtitles are included right at the beginning of the article as a table of contents. But why is that? That is how you get your reader or search engine to decide if this is something worthwhile reading or indexing.

Step Five Decide on the best 2 to 4 lines of text as the “opening” part of the article you write on Medium. Include the keywords and search phrase, along with the topic or topics your article relates to

Step Six — Create your presentation image, one that directly relates to your article topic of discussion (You Might Choose To Use Canva). Put this all together on your Word document, with images in the right places included.

Step Seven — Include the necessary disclosures. Like affiliate product disclosures, or AI content disclosures where applicable. This will get you more exposure on Medium especially. Because it is a legal requirement.

Step Eight — Copy and paste your article content from your Word document into the Medium writing editor. The images you use, however, will not be transferred when copying and pasting the written content.

Next, you scroll through your written article in the Medium editor and include your images. All images must contain the “alt attribute” and correct “image captions”. We also suggest all images in PNG format.

Step Nine — Get your Medium story published in well-known Medium publications, one of the reasons we mention the image alt attributes and captions.

This is one of the most common reasons why most people’s written Medium stories do not get accepted by Medium publications. Along with “off-topic” content.

You might want to check out the following Medium publications where we are writers. Because getting your written Medium article accepted in well-known and established Medium publications offers several advantages.

Step Ten — Internal and external linking. Like with any SEO-optimized article or content, links play an important role too. But you need to avoid including hyperlinks with the keywords and search phrases you wish to rank for as the hyperlink text.

There you have 17 Medium publications you might want to consider applying to be accepted as a writer. When submitting your written Medium article, be sure to stick to the guidelines mentioned earlier.

We have seen a tremendous boost in Medium writing exposure and getting Medium stories indexed in search engines. All by means of writing for these well-known Medium publications.

But besides the requirements we have already covered, you also want to be moderate. Don’t go submitting 10 stories every day. Write perhaps 1 Medium article every 2 to 3 days to publish with medium publications.

Remember that most of them receive hundreds of written Medium articles per day. And they prefer to give all their writers a chance for exposure, so. You’re going to have to “share”.

Medium user experience and readability in search engines.

User experience and readability contribute to the time spent reading your Medium article. When writing a Medium story, you want to pay attention to a few readability suggestions.

Title Length.

Presentation Image.

Sentence Length.

Paragraph Length.

Medium Story Length.

Legal Disclosures.

We have found that shorter titles tend to attract more attention. But we learned that from Author D. Denise Dianaty. Chief editor of the WE PAW Bloggers Medium publication, for whom we also write.

She has always been an inspiration, and always willing to guide. With no exclusion of Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, chief editor of the ILLUMINATION integrated Medium publications.

With presentation images, and all images you use when writing a medium article. We highly suggest using images in PNG file format. This creates a balance between quality and file size.

Therefore, contributing to faster load speed. As you can see below, illustrated are the comments, claps, and responses. Basically, this is one of the advantages of readability. More people will read the entire article.

Author account screenshot. The image screenshot was captured with “Paint 3D”. Shared by Deon Christie for demonstration and illustration purposes. The author assumes responsibility for the provenance and copyright. The author assumes responsibility for the authenticity.

Sentence length with SEO and readability while writing a medium article plays its role. Along with paragraph length. With SEO, be it writing Medium articles or otherwise must not exceed 20 words.

While the paragraphs should not exceed 250 words. Personally, we prefer keeping our content body paragraphs to a maximum of 2 to 3 sentences.

For the best Medium story length, we have also been guided by Author D. Denise Dianaty. Medium readers seldom read posts exceeding 2500 words. So a word count of 1000–2000 words might be recommended.

But it is just a suggested guideline, because we have had some of our articles exceeding 3500 words, and readers still read the Medium articles.

Legal disclosures are important. Always include them where applicable or required. Not only do you comply with legal requirements, but it is also more professional. Transparency builds trust.

Lastly, readability also requires the presence of transition words, and you might want to research those. Words like; Therefore, Because, Hence to name but a few are important.

Because it kind of leads one sentence into another. That way also plays its part in readability and user experience.

Load speed with search engines and Medium writing.

This is basically about what we have mentioned already, image file sizes and formats. PNG images are highly recommended. With blogging, however, you want to use the plugin “Imagify” to optimize images and videos in blog posts.

PNG files create a balance between quality and file size. While with Imagify, not the entire video is loaded when the visitor hits your site. It is only loaded when your reader clicks to watch the video.

This will reduce your blog load speed considerably! Remember that site load speed (especially on mobile devices), and UX (User Experience) are the two most important SEO ranking factors.

To the best of our knowledge, any article, blog, or site should load in less than 6 seconds. Most readers and researchers normally move on after around 6 seconds.

However, and brings us to the conclusion of this tutorial. On how to write medium articles that attract attention and get indexed in search engines.

The time period for which you will maintain your ranking position depends on keyword search volume prediction. The browser extension ‘Keywords Everywhere” takes care of that.

Always bear in mind that search engines receive a lot of fresh content daily, and if someone else’s work is better than yours. Well, then search engines will choose their work over yours.

This is why consistency is so important, and the required research. Because that is the only way you will outwrite and outrank your competitors.
