Summary

Writing effective personal essays requires introspective research, emotional depth, and a unique approach tailored to the writer's personality, with no universal framework applicable to all.

Abstract

Personal essays are challenging to write because they demand the writer to delve into their own experiences and emotions, often confronting and excavating painful or buried memories. Unlike other forms of writing, there is no structured approach to personal essays; each writer must find their own method to access and articulate their inner thoughts and conflicts. This process is highly individualized, with each writer needing to identify what triggers their deeper emotions, whether it's visuals, music, solitude, or conversation. Learning from masters of the craft, such as James Baldwin and David Foster Wallace, can provide insights into the precision, narrative hook, and emotional resonance necessary for a compelling personal essay. Reading extensively and experimenting with different techniques are key to developing one's style and effectiveness in personal essay writing.

How to Write Effective Personal Essays

There is no structured framework to crack this

Personal essays are the most difficult ones to pen. When you write about a topic, you research that topic, take relevant content from certain sources, structure your content, and then write it down. It is time-consuming. It has its difficulties. But there is a framework that works, and it is not that difficult to follow.

Writing a personal essay need you to do primary research with yourself. You have to pose difficult questions to yourself, and like a talented journalist, you have to break the hull your mind builds up.

You need to dive in and find that wrecked ship, and bravely step inside to find the treasure. Remember, treasures are always hidden!

It is easier said than done. Effective personal essays are born from wounds and inner conflicts. The challenge here is that these are the same things your mind is trying to bury deep to escape the pain. Most of the times, these thoughts are buried so deep that you won’t be able to fathom the distance. You miss it.

How do you dive so deep and retrieve the treasure? The same way a normal diver becomes an expert diver. You practice. But like I said before, there is a process in place for writing on other topics. What is an identified framework for writing personal essays?

The answer to the question is, “None”. Personal essays stem from personalized efforts. There is no ‘One-size-fits-all’ approach to this problem. How do you personalize? The answer is in your personality, you need to analyze your behaviour to crack this part.

I can help you by telling how I cracked mine. I am easily evoked by visuals. Vision or Imagery is an important catalyst for evoking my deeper emotions. When I watch a movie scene or watch a video of a song or look at a beautiful photograph or see something profound happening around me, I find myself overwhelmed with emotions. My mind starts bringing in thoughts that were once buried deep. I tap into this natural phenomenon of my mind to fuel my writing. It is kind of exploitation, but it is by itself a mechanism to breach your fear.

For some people, it could be listening to meaningful music or reading other personal essays or being alone for some time or talking to their best friend. It differs, but it is worth your time figuring it out. I am not sure if this is helpful, but I hope that this would at least be a starting point for someone to explore other ways that work for them.

Learn From the Masters

“Creating a self-portrait sounds easy, but to describe oneself with bandages and all, a person must place their inspirational, mundane, vulgar, and dross experiences into a fitting perspective, which entails describing how encounters with other humanoids influenced him or her.” ― Kilroy J. Oldster, Dead Toad Scrolls

Mr Kilroy is spot on regarding creating self-portraits. It is difficult to describe the true ‘you’, as you know it. It takes courage and a great deal of self-motivation to get it out.

Read more personal essays from titans like James Baldwin (The First Next Time) or David Foster Wallace (Consider the Lobster). If you pay attention to critically acclaimed personal essays, you would find that they are told on very compelling topics. The focus is precise and narrow, and the opening statements are remarkably hooking. It does not request but demands the attention of someone who would have just glanced their eyes over it. It is personal and touching, and it creates an empathy with the narrating voice. It is not easy to convey something personal in a way that it evokes an emotion in the reader. It is not a playing ground for creative thoughts, but a battlefield for your personal experiences. It is a fight, an unruly one.

Conclusion

To write better, you need to read a lot. You need to understand the craft from the people who have paved the way. But the style differs for each, thus making it important to read a lot from a particular department that you are trying to ace.

For personal essays, reading a lot, combined with finding a method that works for you, will do the magic. It is a trial and error method, but it is worth trying.
