How To Write An Article A Day On Medium

Why writing daily is good for the soul and your wallet.

In late 2018, I graduated from university with a degree I wasn’t interested in. I had little to no direction in my life. At that point, I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I had no idea what it meant to be an entrepreneur. Simply put, I was lost without a purpose to keep me afloat.

Noah Levy long-hair-edition or Adam Neumann?

I applied to hundreds of jobs just to settle for a meager Virginia-based job where I cold-called hundreds of people a day…all for only $35,000 a year. I hated it. And in career-focused America, when you hate your job, it feels like you hate yourself.

In America, our identities are unfortunately entangled with our careers.

I was no different, without a successful career I didn’t know what to do.

Fast forward a year later, I am working on my startup while writing daily on Medium. I don’t get published every day, which is okay. When you’re starting out, like I am, you cannot expect immediate success.

But regardless of experience, I am able to write an article a day on Medium. If done right, your passion can at the very least turn into a side hustle and at the very most, a career.

Write on Medium’s Mobile App

When I have an idea, I don’t think about it. I just start writing and I let the idea flow naturally.

Writing in the moment is the only way for me to stay consistent. The kindergarten adage of “think before you say something” doesn’t work with writing.

Good ideas can get lost. You cannot afford to lose them.

I used to write daily in my Apple Notes app, but the format is not conducive to publishing articles. An article doesn’t have a personality on Notes. Whereas you can change the font size and hyperlink other articles on Medium, you can create flare.

Medium’s mobile app is made for writing content that’ll eventually be published. That’s why Medium distinguishes itself from other apps — because people will read what you write on Medium but not from your Notes app.

Write in Dark Mode

Despite the fact that I mainly work and write from my phone, I hate using mobile technology for anything else. I don’t have any games. I deleted my Facebook and Instagram apps. I use WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, but I prefer in-person conversations.

I despise using mobile technology a little bit less when I write in dark mode.

Although dark mode doesn’t always make it easier on the eyes, I still prefer writing in dark mode over the regular environment. These little settings can make the world of difference, get crafty in how you figure out what is right for you.

Get Rid of Distractions

Too busy checking Snapchat every hour? Feeling FOMO because you’re not going out on New Year’s Eve?

Then delete your social media apps, it’s difficult to do but simple.

Some have called social media platforms, like Facebook, the cigarettes of our century.

You need to stop using products that feed your addiction and start using ones that can help you grow as a person. Between monetizing your content and writing as a mechanism for self-growth, Medium can help.

Better more, stop telling yourself that you’ll write and start doing it!

Don’t Make Writing a Routine

My 2020 personal goal is to write an article a day, and my eight-week goal is to increase my publication acceptance rate.

Yet I refuse to make writing a routine.

Sometimes I wake up and feel like writing. Other times I wake up and don’t feel like writing. So far my writing patterns aren’t consistent. That’s okay. We have moods, we are human!

What’s the difference between my goal to write daily versus a goal to write tomorrow at 10 am in Starbucks?

The difference is that your goal of establishing a routine is not fit for you as a human. You cannot predict when you’ll be tired, or lazy, or simply don’t want to write. Predicting what you want tomorrow is harder than predicting the weather.

You shouldn’t plan your life, you should just live it.

If Medium didn’t exist, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.

I personally think this is the easiest place to create content for an audience, I couldn’t be more thankful to have Medium in my life.

Medium also allows you the opportunity to be a writer. Too many people write and set goals without actually accomplishing them.

It’s time to stop thinking and start doing. Downloading an app takes less than one minute. Writing this article took me less than two hours.

Well, what are you waiting for?
