How to Write a Kickass Article Introduction

Agitate the wound.

“Umm…..”

Don’t worry, you have time.

“Umm…….”

Okay, not a century.

That’s how most writers react when it’s time to write an introduction for their articles. I can’t lie, introductions used to scare the shit out of me too.

I needed to open with something elaborate.

Something legendary like the damn Star Wars intro with words flying by on the screen.

Now, I can write an intro on command.

Intros are NOT complicated.

One of my favorite writers, Nicolas Cole, made me think of intros as a simple concept — the introduction of the problem.

Your article will always have 3 main parts — problem, agitation, and solution.

Only worry about presenting the problem and agitating it with your intro.

Here’s the best part:

Your intros don’t need to belong AT ALL. Think of the reader.

They don’t want to read a 5-minute soliloquy before they jump into the meat of your article. You should keep it easy and simple.

For example, let’s say we write an article called “These 8 Bad Habits Get Writers in Trouble.”

Here’s a classic intro I would write:

The biggest reason why 99% of writers quit is because of inconsistency.

They don’t understand the actual benefits of consistent publishing. They want to be like the unicorn writers who have massive success in 6 months. Yet they don’t realize how much work and experience is necessary for luck like that to happen.

So here are the 8 bad habits that get writers in trouble.

Boom.

Notice how I wrote it in 5 sentences max. I presented the problem and WHY the reader should be worried about it.

Then, I introduced my article by restating the headline.

The only “hard” part of the introduction is the agitation part. But if you understand why the problem is so bad, it’s easy to agitate the reader.

Once you have an introduction that presents the problem and agitates the reader, the reader’s eyes will flow down the screen naturally.

So what are you waiting for?
