What about a walk in the Huntley Meadows Park before it gets too hot?

My still cloudy brain accepted my husband’s early morning challenge. “OK. I’ll get ready.”

We’ve been walking in the evenings to avoid the steamy hot Summer days in Northern Virginia. It’s September and a change it’s a great idea.

We walked on the park trail, on the side of the South Kings Highway, for about 2.5 miles, which feels like 10 miles in mid-August. Today, it felt like 4 miles in time for all my stops to take pictures and wave to the people walking in the opposite direction.

The park has a paved trail where my thoughts run free, and my eyes can’t stop admiring the green vegetation, butterflies, the first few dry leaves on the ground, and the view of the pond at the end of the trail.

I walk every time I have the chance to do it.

When I was a teenager, I hiked a hilly dirt road with a tour guide. As he explained the wonders of the trees and cliffs along the way, I rushed ahead of the group. When they caught up with me, the guide said, “Girl, you are a great walker!”

I took it as a compliment. It made me feel so proud of myself. Deep in my brain, I stored the guide’s words with a happy feeling that inspires me to walk every time I have the chance to do it.

Walking takes longer… than any known form of locomotion except crawling. Thus it stretches time and prolongs life. Life is already too short to waste on speed. — Edward Abbey, “Walking”

What are the benefits of walking?

As my husband was the challenger, I interviewed him about the benefits of the walk when we finished.

These are the results of the interview. I nodded as he described each benefit.

My body felt better as my cardiovascular system started pumping faster.

My knees felt more flexible when my muscles warmed up.

I enjoyed the clean air and the sounds of nature: the soft wind, the chirping of birds and bugs.

My mind rested while I observed the beauty of nature around the park.

I felt comfortable as the temperature in the morning had not ignited the sauna that makes me thirsty and sweaty later in the day.

Imitating a professional interviewer, I ended asking for his final thoughts. His answer: “I am ready for lunch!”

What are your final thoughts?

Are you ready for a walk in a park? Search the web for parks in your county. For example, a search for parks near Fairfax County, VA, gave me a list of the parks around me.

If you are more ambitious, here is a link to the National Park Service to help you find a park in your state. Click on a state in the map and double-click to zoom in. The page also lists all the parks.

Remember to wave to the people like me who can’t waste an opportunity to greet another human being.
