How To Wake Up Like A Champ!

10 Do’s and Don’ts

As an entrepreneur, I want to continue waking up bright and early. There were times in my life when I struggled to get up and then there were times when it was as easy as pie.

I have identified the key factors for both scenarios.

Childhood rising pattern

Have we found the root?

I was raised on a farm.

I shared a room with my big sister. Her name is Annarine and she is two years older than me.

I didn’t particularly enjoy sharing a room with her as our morning habits were different.

I like getting up early.

I like opening the curtains to say,

hallo day, how you doin’ ?!

I like opening a window to let in the fresh morning air. It has a particular smell, that dewey smell.

I also like how cold air makes me feel ALIVE.

As you can well imagine I wasn’t very popular with Annarine as result.

My dad is a 5 am riser. He is a hard worker and ambitious.

Most of our mental programs are formed age 1–7. See this Harvard study about how neural networks are formed.

It could very well be a proficient early riser because of my dad and the example he set.

However, my siblings are different. It shows you that people living with the same conditions can end up with totally different outcomes.

Times I just couldn’t get up

It was killing me…

As the law of attraction has it, I have pretty much always dated guys who like to lie in.

During these times I did find myself becoming lazy or lethargic when I stayed in bed with them.

The other instance where I could not get up was when I had felt depressed.

A trusted friend once gave me this gem of wisdom.

Helen, when we feel depressed and we want to sleep more, it is the body’s way of healing us, so don’t fight it, embrace it and soon it will pass.

Indeed it was so.

The do’s and don’ts of early rising

Practice what resonates with you

  1. If you think it will be difficult it will be an effort. Don’t attempt waking up early, coming from a negative attitude. Fix your attitude first.
  2. Have a plan for your day. Schedule those things that are most important at the beginning of the morning. For each of us that will be different. Your priorities can also change — remain lighthearted and adaptable. For example, you might feel that right now you prefer taking a long walk when you wake up because it helps you stay positive for the rest of the day. That could shift in a couple of months where you rather prefer using the early hours to create content or meditate.
  3. Don’t check Social Media or emails.
  4. Do listen to anything that can positively reprogram your mind or inspire you, including music.
  5. Tune into feelings of appreciation, express it out loud if possible.
  6. If you struggle to wake up, try these practical solutions. [a] Make sure one foot and leg is out of the bed and on the floor [b] listen to upbeat music and once you are out of the bed dance like a crazy person. Use headphones if you don’t want to wake up the neighbors.
  7. Have a bottle of water next to your bed and down it as soon as you awaken. Your bladder will help you get out of bed and the cells of your body will start emitting happy vibrations.
  8. Turn on a bedlamp, not the main switch.
  9. Open the curtains even if it is dark out.
  10. Write one full A4 page of any thoughts that are in your mind, even if they don’t make sense. Throw away the page, don’t reflect. This method will help you clear your head and help you stay focused during the day.

Conclusion

As always — keep it simple. Actions alone won’t help us grow up in life.

If we want to BE early risers and productive people, we have to BE it not act it.
