How to Use Mel Robbin’s 5 Second Rule to Get Healthier Today
Mel Robbin’s nailed it with this concept to beat procrastination and achieve goals

According to New York Times best-selling author, Mel Robbins, the 5 Second Rule is a simple strategy that can help you overcome procrastination and achieve your goals. She literally wrote an entire book on it, called (you guessed it) The 5 Second Rule.
It’s a self-help tool designed to help people to take action or make decisions immediately. The premise is that if you don’t take action within 5 seconds, then your brain will kill the impulse.
Then…
{procrastination walks in}
The rule is simple: if you have an urge to do something, count 5–4–3–2–1 and then do it now instead of putting it off.
This may seem silly, but it can be incredibly effective. I use this all the time in my personal life.
When the alarm goes off at 4:50 A.M. it’s hard to just jump out of bed. Once I start the 5–4–3–2–1 countdown after a nice long stretch, I don’t bound out of bed, but I slowly inch my body into an upright position without hesitation.
It’s almost as if I don’t want to disappoint myself by ignoring the 5–4–3–2–1 countdown.
I try to make a healthy protein smoothie every day. Want to know why?
Energy!
I fill my smoothie with loads of nutrient-dense foods as well as a protein powder.
I feel more energized on the days I drink my powerhouse smoothie.
But you know what — some days I get lazy about it. Which is the total opposite of how I want to feel and how the smoothie makes me feel.
This is another place where the 5-Second Rule saves me. I do the countdown and I make the damn smoothie without hesitation. The mindset shift that comes from counting 5–4–3–2–1 helps me to banish procrastination.
Here are some tips on how to use the 5 Second Rule to get healthier:
- Use it to start exercising. If you’re feeling unmotivated to work out, count 5–4–3–2–1 and then put on your workout clothes. Once you’re dressed, it’s much more likely that you’ll actually start exercising.
- Use it to eat healthier. If you’re tempted to reach for a junk food snack, count 5–4–3–2–1 and then walk away (or take a walk) or choose something healthier. If you can resist the temptation for the first five seconds, you’re much more likely to resist it altogether.
- Use it to break bad habits. If you have a bad habit, like biting your nails or smoking, try counting 5–4–3–2–1 before you give in to the temptation. If you can resist the temptation for the first five seconds, you’re much more likely to break the habit for good. It helps to imagine your life without the bad habit — in this example imagine how nice your fingers would look with longer polished nails.
The 5 Second Rule is a simple but powerful tool that can help you achieve your goals, no matter how big or small, one task at a time.
When applied to your health goals, the potential is limitless because you are taking action, instead of putting off the things you know will help you get healthier.
